Revisado: 09-24-16
Where does Mrs Queen Takes the Train rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is somewhere in between the Royal Spyness books and the Night Circus. It is some calmingly read and the story is clearly going somewhere, it is fun to just ride along.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I always go for the Scots.
Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he does a terrific job all along
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Just a couple of listens, didn't leave it though.
Any additional comments?
One of those pleasant books that I will listen to again, a bit of a gem.

Epic - so happy it is available in audiobook
Revisado: 09-03-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Shogun to be better than the print version?
In some ways yes, it is great to hear the pronounciation of some of the Japanese words and having different voices helps to keep the characters straight. I have read the print version twice over the years, it was also highly enjoyable and required a closer following which made the book that much more enjoyable.
What other book might you compare Shogun to and why?
Shogun was one of the originial historical novels, if you read the Lions of Al Rasam, or the Nicolo series - which are hardly literary juggernauts - you can see a number of familiar tropes. Though people love the Noble House in this series, and it is very good, I prefer Shogun - it stands alone without trying to refer to prior characters which, while very clever and pretty fun, struck me a bit forced at the same time
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A drop of the West into the Ancient East

Would you listen to The Cuckoo's Calling again? Why?
Absolutely, this was a pleasure to listen to. The characters were interesting, believable and efficiently written
What does Robert Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He did an excellent job with slightly different accents for the various characters. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A modern day Agatha tale, but he's no Poirot
Any additional comments?
Without knowing the author's true identity, this book is very well written and would have been just as enjoyable. I don't know what it is, but the writing has more intelligence and style than some of the flat, 2 dimensional offerings I have read in the genre.

Subtle yet a bit unsatisfying
Revisado: 03-30-16
I enjoyed this listen overall and given the material, I was glad to have it narrated by the author. He does a nice job and since there's a reasonable amount of interpretation of what's going on, I liked having an informed guide. While I liked it, I liked it in a "I had to read it for school but I enjoyed it."
I thought there would be a little more of the story spelled out here. It is certainly a good premise, like a movie with a great trailer that is only pretty good

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Better than the physical book - highly recommended
Revisado: 02-09-16
Where does Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my favorites, certainly top 20, maybe top 10. It is long, which I prefer, yet I was sorry to finish. Very enjoyable listen
What was one of the most memorable moments of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell?
I have read the physical book so I really enjoyed the pacing of the audio versus the physical read. I found that the audio book gets through the slower parts a bit quicker, which in this book is a big plus.
What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?
He has a distinctive voice for each character and I felt like they were generally good fits. His accents were good, quite good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Too long to do so but I couldn't put it down after the half way point

My name is Marten Mann. I work for the devil, or the prince of lies, as you people are so fond of calling him. Yes. You read that last line correctly. I am employed by the powers of evil as acquisitor ad infinitum. I did not seek out this job: I was chosen for the position. To put it in simpler terms, I am a broker of sorts - you know, the guy who finds out what it is that you want the most. I make it readily available to you for a price. I think we all know just how costly that one thing that you think you need so much can be.

Somehow, this has become one of my favorite audiobooks of the 500 I have. The narration is excellent and resonant, the story is original and clever, the writing fine. The audio performance is really compelling and I have listened to this book six or seven times now. It’s a comfort listen though the material wouldn’t appear to be. Highly recommended

If you could sum up Red Notice in three words, what would they be?
Russian investment shenanigans
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Just a great listen, great story, interesting subject matter and a crazy story line
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found the book fascinating, as did my parents. Highly recommend
Any additional comments?
The only downside to this book is can be a bit like those stories where one challenge comes up after another and it seems like ti will never end. I got over it, and you should too.

Brutal Narration
Revisado: 09-10-15
Would you listen to Race of Scorpions again? Why?
I was trying to, the story is complex but the narrator is just killing me. The first book, Niccolo Rising had such a better narrator, I can't imagine why they switched.
What did you like best about this story?
The complexity, scheming and locations are great, but it is a tough listen due to the narrator
Did Christopher Kay do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Ugh, no. The accents are an assault on the senses
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Story-wise, yes, but it's long
Any additional comments?
Though my daughter loves the series, I have to pass on the audioversion, probably a better read
