The first book of Paul Rahe that I have read and his scholarship, level-headed examination of all the alternative interpretations of the original sources (mainly Herodotus) and other scholars, followed by his conclusion is top-class. I intend to read all his other books.
The title is misleading - this is really the story of the Greco-Persian wars until the aftermath of Plataea and Mycale, but is the best version I have read.
The narrator is very good but lost one star for the little pauses he makes before saying a person’s or place’s name. To be fair, there are a lot of difficult names and his pronunciation, although sometimes different from anglicised version, is excellent.

Unlike the first novel, the main character feels like a bully, and honestly it’s not fun. The world building is fun but the character interactions that I found so fun in the first novel aren’t here. It’s honestly incredibly disappointing. I was able to get through most of the book but couldn’t finish it since it frustrated me so much

I liked the story, in and of itself. That was great even. A nice litrpg to enjoy. What I didn't enjoy were the constant lapses into theology. It didn't help that it felt like I was being preached too. If it happened once or twice that would be fine but it happens again and again to the point that I had to hold back from rolling my eyes whenever it happened. It just feels so out of place and doesn't connect with the rest of the story, which I feel, really detracts from the experience. If you're Christian, you might enjoy this, as the theology was basically Christianity with some fantasy elements. I'm not however, so it just felt like a waste of time.

Holy **** this book is amazing. The character and story, and the way it unfolds is simply stunning. I won’t spoil anything but you’ll be doing yourself a favor if you get this.

Now can we have a sequel please? I’m desperate to find out more

This book was phenomenal and I couldn't stop listening. It is perfect on so many levels. I don't spoil anything though. I went in blind and that's the best way to experience this

I love this series. The writing is excellent and exciting. It has a great RPG feel which scratches my gaming itch. However, i feel that it has many problems as well. First of all, each book is too short for what happens. Whenever I listen, I feel impatient for the story to move forward. It feels as if it sacrifices good pacing for an in depth look at never ending loot and RPG elements. While this is fun on its own, it takes away from the story, which is interesting and even more enjoyable. I love the world and want to learn more about it. Then there's Richter. I'm torn by him. On one hand he's an interesting guy and I enjoy his enthusiasm. On the other, he's flat. Everything goes well for him. Even when life goes badly, he comes back right away, stronger than ever. He's also an annoying perv at times whose life is never bad. I have read many books from the litrpg genre, and many fantasy novels with similar elements. It's honestly sad that, at least in my experience, the man called the father of LitRPG, has been exceeded by his children. I could go in depth into more things I find problematic with this novel but I'll stop hear. I normally wouldn't bother writing a review but this series has so much potential. It just needs to fix some core problems, the pacing being the main one. It feels simultaneously too fast, because events happen one after another in an unrealistic manner, and too slow, because each of these events takes up hours of listening time, and barely advances the plot. I hope this changes as time goes on but I don't have high hopes.
