Nice Horror SciFi Made Better by R.C. Bray

I listened to this book because R.C. Bray is the narrator. The story itself was ok, I guess. Has rousing elements of excitement, if a bit over-the-top. Has a fifties style ending as-in "The End?" Robinson could have left that out. Would have been better without it.

This is a nature lover's horror story. Lots of military hate -- at least at the beginning. But, again, I guess I enjoyed it and Bray's narration sells it.

I love the Firefly series. The narrator is perfect. This story is typical for the series, but, as I said, it is spoiled by an overbearing hatred of rich folks. Shame.

After the last book ended woth a cliffhanger, I was concerned about where the series was going. Using cliffhangers to maintain readership is lame. But that wasn't it at all. It was a big story arc that needed two books to wrap up. It's all wrapped up now, but I still want to keep going. So, that's a good sign.

This is a good author with a fun story and a great narrator. Enjoy! Don't start reading the series with this one though. You need backstory.

Not Brando's Best Work

Let me be clear. I have enjoyed every book I have ever read that was written by Brandon Sanderson. So, my expectations were very high for this one. Unfortunately, I felt disappointed. For me, the book seemed to suffer from having an editor who allowed Brando to ramble. It is a 60+ hour slog that seems largely pointless. It could have been tightened up a lot.

About halfway through, I lost interest, and it became a push to get through it. That feeling of "get it over with already" overshadowed my interest in the characters. By the end, I couldn't care less about them. I was just glad it was over.

Finally, the story sets up for the next five books, which aren't promised for over 10 years. So, the reader is left hanging in several ways. Also, the fate of some of the characters is unclear. He lets you assume what happens to them. It really fell flat for me at the end.

Are there good bits? Sure. But if you listen, listen on high speed, maybe slowing down for the good bits. Otherwise, wait until the other five books are published. Better yet, skip it. Oathbringer was a better ending to the series.

If you are a fan of role-playing games like D&D, and if you like hearing the battle reports from such games, you'll love this. It does not appear that this is a serious work. There are elements of comedy in it. Take that into consideration as you listen.

The narrator has a really good range of voices that brings the story to life.

Isaacson puts a lot of himself and his opinions in this book. For me, it devalues the validity of the work. i have come away from this book changed. Having once admired Musk, I now see him as a petulant, arrogant child who, having adopted his own idea of what it means to save humanity, has no trouble littering his path with broken human lives. I suppose that was Isaacson's purpose all along. Disappointing.

i wonder though, am I right to change my opinion based on this book -- this author?

i will not read another book by Isaacson.

Being a fan of the Critical Drinker (Will Jordan), I had hoped this would be better than it was. Story seemed to lean heavy on emotion instead of providing real depth. Linear storyline with flashbacks. Plot seemed over-the-top.
Narrator's choice to make characters sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Stathem further brought it down to "pop movie" status.

Would have liked a deeper plot and a little humor break now and again.

i think this is Jordan's first book? Maybe he'll get better. Cavea: This is not my usual genre. So my review may be slightly skewed to the negative.

This is hard science fiction with a number of terms that I just don't know. I think part of the fun of the book will be the Wikipedia journey through the various brain maladies mentioned.

There is a solid story. it makes the reader question the value of sentience (sapience?) and perhaps one's own sanity. At times the reader may even wonder about the reality of experience.

The book requires focus. There's a lot going on. If that's your jam, dive in.

Generally not the kind of book I choose to read. Yet, it pulled me in. I became very vested in the real people introduced to me in the book. I unexpectedly learned at least one tip about cooking. "Why add flour when you can just reduce?"

The book made me smile and laugh. It made me cry. It held my interest. What more can you ask from a book? I hope you enjoy it as much and as I did. And, I hope you feel as close to Bob (Yves) as I did.

Well done Mr. Buford. Well done.
