This book is an authority
Revisado: 06-05-22
I've started to read a lot of books and listen to a lot of podcasts on healthy eating and living and no matter what I read and listen to, it's just a matter of time before this book is referenced or cited. I finally decided to go to the source.
I found myself wanting more details and maybe one of his other books will provide them, but the stories and data presented are interesting and I can see why others cite it as an important study on healthy lifestyles.
Notable to me is the notion that we should eat a lot less meat and a lot more vegetables and be more social, but that isn't shoved down anyone's throat. but rather presented as one observation among many.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

No one is tougher than David Goggins
Revisado: 07-02-19
No excuses and no apologies. This is a story worth listening to. Goggins tells it all from being abused as a child to running the world's most difficult Ultra races. You don't need to be a runner to enjoy it. Only caveat is that the language is NSFW and not for children. He explains it and doesn't apologize. Best part of this book is the podcast style discussions between Goggins and the narrator/co-author between sections that you won't get with the printed book. A new kind of media that I would love to see crop up in other books.

Historia
Taking place during the most critical period of our nation’s birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington’s character, but also illuminates the origins of America’s counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA. In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan.

Interesting, but not spellbinding
Revisado: 04-27-19
Overall worth the read, but never felt like I couldn't put it down. a ton of well-researched information, but the story overall seems to lack an APEX moment and cathartic release. Scott Brick is amazing as usual. Don't skip this one, but you may appreciate it more if your expectations arent too high.

Historia
Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away.

Best Gamache book yet!
Revisado: 07-21-18
This is one of the best Gamache novels. The story keeps you guessing and entertained throughout. In this Gamache novel, the murder story takes a back seat to the overall background story of the series. You have to read these in order if you want to get the full affect and understanding of the development of the characters. Ralph's Cosham is amazing and I am not sure how I'm going to handle some of the later novels after a new narrator had to be chosen. On to the next one!

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

One of my favorite in this series!
Revisado: 07-16-15
Great narration as always. This story leaves Three Pines without leaving it. I enjoyed the reunion of Jean Guy and Gamache and Clara's search for Peter. Just enough Ruth for comic relief. The storyline was not predictable and kept me guessing. A very good listen.

Historia
Cowboy stories and movies about the Wild West are full of amazing characters. Yet many of the lawmen we think of as heroes were anything but - some were violent scoundrels and outlaws themselves. Among all the lawmen of the frontier, one man stands out as a true hero: Bass Reeves. In his day, Bass Reeves was the most successful federal marshal in the United States. True to the mythical code of the West, he never drew his gun first. He rounded up hundreds of outlaws and was shot at countless times but was never hit. Bass Reeves was born into slavery.
