I loved this follow up novel. It had the same relationship sweetness and complexities while also throwing us into the NYC art scene and reminding us that art can have purpose.

Historia
Piper Perish inhales air and exhales art. The sooner she and her best friends can get out of Houston and get to New York City, the better. Art school has been Piper's dream her whole life, and now that senior year is halfway over, she's never felt more ready. But in the final months before graduation, things are weird with her friends and stressful with three different guys, and Piper's sister's tyrannical mental state seems to thwart every attempt at happiness for the close-knit Perish family.

This was a really fun listen. I got very invested in Piper’s story and inspired by her commitment to her dream and unapologetic love of art.

Historia
Veteran script consultant Jill Chamberlain discovered in her work that an astounding 99 percent of first-time screenwriters don't know how to tell a story. What the 99 percent do instead is present a situation. In order to explain the difference, Chamberlain created the nutshell technique, a method whereby writers identify eight dynamic, interconnected elements that are required to successfully tell a story. Now, for the first time, Chamberlain presents her unique method in audiobook form with The Nutshell Technique: Crack the Secret of Successful Screenwriting.

Very insightful
Revisado: 01-21-24
I enjoyed the clarity, simplicity, and examples. I do wish there was more diversity of examples. And sometimes the nutshells felt forced or not fully explained (e.g., why is this specific situation the perfect test of someone’s flaw)?
That said, it is well worth the read, and I am already implementing lessons from this book in my writing and liking the results.

What a totally unexpected and delightful book and performance. So imaginative. Consistently funny and enjoyable. And moving at unexpected moments.
I was worried about how the audio would be on such a visual book, but the performances were terrific and kept me absorbed and chuckling the entire time.

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Historia
Have you or your colleagues ever worked hard on something, only to find out you were focusing on the wrong problem entirely? Most people have. In a survey, 85 percent of companies said they often struggle to solve the right problems. The consequences are severe: Leaders fight the wrong strategic battles. Teams spend their energy on low-impact work. Startups build products that nobody wants. Organizations implement “solutions” that somehow make things worse, not better. Everywhere you look, the waste is staggering.

This was such an delightful listen. The insights in this book are thoughtful, clear, and instantly useful. What’s more, I found myself laughing or smiling all along the way, which made me want to engage with the topic more and keep thinking about it even when I wasn’t reading. I learned new things and had new ideas even though I thought I was already very familiar with problem solving research and techniques.
The narration was also clear, playful, and matched the tone of the book perfectly.

Historia
Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying collection of essays that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives. His is a meditation on delight that takes a clear-eyed view of the complexities, even the terrors, in his life, including living in America as a Black man; the ecological and psychic violence of our consumer culture; the loss of those he loves.
