Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom - and vengeance. Jazmyne is the queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power. Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain - except the lengths they will go to win this game.

hard to finish
Revisado: 09-13-23
I was really intrigued by the politics and magic of this book, but I felt like the writing was lacking in a few areas. A lot of times I felt like the separate chapters POV didn't line up and there was a lot of threads that didn't make sense at end. I wish their individual plans at the end were hinted at better - felt like there needed to be a few more chapters to explain things but then there were other chapters where it felt like nothing happened. Overall I found it a bit messy - I wish there were a few more drafts to tighten up the story before it was published.

this book is the best of the three!
Revisado: 06-28-23
I loved this book - definitely the most mature of the three! the writing flowed very nicely, I loved the addition to the world building and the villain was great. I was hooked the whole time! only thing is that I wish Adam and Rune's relationship was just a bit more touched upon. Rune and Brand have a lot more chemistry together, so I would've liked to see Adam and Rune more to make the relationship make a bit more sense. other than that, great book! I am excited to see what else this author has in store for us.

liked this book!
Revisado: 06-17-23
There's some info dump at the beginning that isn't necessary - so much so I rolled my eyes while listening to it. On top of that, there's some concepts later that are just thrown into the book. Like... I don't need sigils explained to me show me how Rune uses them. BUT there's just some random things added in that aren't necessary near the end? I did like all the characters but some women would be nice lol. I love Rune and Adam and I'm excited to see where they go in the next books. I think the characters are the strongest part of this book. Entertaining, but not a book I would recommend specifically to other people.

A great book with a fantastic narrator.
Revisado: 05-19-23
I really loved this book. It has everything I want in a fantasy romance - a good magic system, an intriguing plot line, and a relationship that MAKES SENSE. I found it refreshing the two main characters gayness was never really questioned and presented as totally normal - sometimes LGBT books get really caught up in the coming out stories so I really liked that it wasn't like that.
I found the plot interesting, but it did give the feel of kind of point A to point B. I also felt like Balin needed a bit more agency in the Paladin order to really make sense - I would have loved if he had a little band of paladins to help him and back his king politically. I also loved the magic system and how it was nearly religious, loved the extra politics outside of the domestic sphere too. The romance was great, gave me some good butterflies. This book is also rather explicit, for those who are unsure.
I am excited to see what else this author has to offer! I was looking for some other works and was disappointed to see this was the only other one. I hope he has some stuff planned for us!

Refreshing Modern Fantasy
Revisado: 04-20-21
I enjoyed this book! It was narrated very well, although the voices sometimes were hard to tell apart. Her accents were great!
As for the story, I found the world building to be much more interesting over the actual conflict. I wanted to know more and more about the magic system, the older characters, and loved all the different little lessons the main characters went on. I felt like the final conflict was quite sudden and that the main characters weren't ready to face such a big threat. Overall, I found this book entertaining and engaging, which in my mind, makes it a good book.
