Historia
It is 1904. When Frederick and Jette must flee her disapproving mother, where better to go than America, the land of the new? Originally set to board a boat to New York, at the last minute, they take one destined for New Orleans instead ("What's the difference? They're both new."), and later find themselves, more by chance than by design, in the small town of Beatrice, Missouri. Not speaking a word of English, they embark on their new life together.

A Good Story
Revisado: 10-26-21
Excuse the pun. I couldn't resist.
At times hilarious. At times heartbreaking. Alex weaves a beautiful tapestry of not one, but two tales. First, a fictional family's immigration to the US and the generations that follow. Secondly, the story of a changing America as seen through the eyes of those immigrants.
It is well worth a read and you won't be disappointed.

okay, let me start off by saying that i have NOT watched the TV miniseries starring Chris Evans and based on this book. As a result, I had no idea where it was going. I assumed it was about Jacob (boy, was i wrong...). I won't give away the twist at the end for those who haven't watched it either, but I NEVER SAW THAT COMING! Wow!
Great read! Great narrator!

But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.
