The reader did a good job of differentiating voices fir different characters but mispronounced several words and had odd phrasing here and there. overall it didn't ruin the story, it was just a little annoying. The subject matter wasn't for me as a mom. It would be my worst nightmare, The second part of the book was a bit unrealistic but not as terrifying as the first. I wouldn't recommend this book. One of the redeeming features is that it was not filled with gratuitous sex, graphic violence, or profanity.

The story was interesting and kept me listening until the end. The narration was terrible. The mechanical phrasing, and cadence of the reading was so unnatural, it was very distracting at times. I really enjoy that Jeremy winters stories. I wish they would choose another reader.

The story was engaging and entertaining till the end. I really enjoyed thinking about these futuristic prospects and Koontz is always a master of the "what if".
I highly recommend this book, but I didn't love the ending. Maybe there will be a sequel! I also appreciated that, for a cop thriller, with a lot of guns, it wasn't rife with violence, sex, or profanity.

There is a lot to love about this book. It has great characters who are all so different, but become a family. You'll come to know them all well and root for them even if you don't particularly like them. It's set in the 50s, with the struggles of 1950s America, like the Korean conflict, Russian spies, women's rights and the beginning of the Civil Rights movement. It's a murder mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.

This one will keep you listening and guessing right to the end. It was a bit complicated and I had to go back and re-read some parts but it was interesting with a batman like undercurrent. The protagonist was a kind of anti-hero but I still rooted for him.

Feminist metaphor gone wrong

"When Women Were Dragons" seems like an attempt to tackle feminist themes through the imaginative metaphor of women transforming into dragons. Though the metaphor of women turning into dragons to represent feminist awakening is intriguing, instead of being empowering, the metaphor feels heavy-handed and exclusionary, creating an impression of antagonism towards men. This portrayal skews the narrative towards a more divisive stance rather than fostering understanding or inclusivity.
Despite the overarching issues with the metaphor, the main characters—particularly Alex and Beatrice—are well-developed and likable. Their personal struggles and growth provide some of the book's more engaging moments. Alex and Beatrice's journey towards a happy ending is one of the book's redeeming aspects, offering a sense of closure and relief.
The symbol of knots is introduced early in the story, hinting at deeper connections and complexities. Unfortunately, this symbolic thread is dropped halfway through the novel and never really tied together, leaving me to wonder where that thread was going. I was also expecting mathematics to have a significant role in the connection between Alex and her mother, but it was mentioned and never fully explored.

The characters are relatable however I found myself wanting more background on their histories and what drives them. It would have added an extra layer of richness to the story. The plot is meticulously structured, with a gripping court case at its core. The suspense built and kept me listening as the trial unfolded. The twist at the end is genuinely surprising and well-executed, a testament to Methos' skill in crafting unpredictable narratives. It's one of those moments that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the case, adding significant impact to the story. Despite the engaging buildup, the conclusion feet somewhat rushed. After such an intricate setup, the resolution lacked the punch I expected. The wrap-up is efficient but doesn't quite deliver the emotional or dramatic payoff that the rest of the book seemed to promise. It's a minor letdown in an otherwise solid narrative.
One of the book's strengths is its tone. Methos manages to create a tense, immersive atmosphere without resorting to excessive gore, explicit sex, or profanity. This makes "Secret Witness" a thriller that relies on psychological tension and moral dilemmas rather than shock value, appealing to a broader audience.

This is a tale with lots of layer and twists & turns. By the end you'll feel as if you know the characters and even like most of them. It spans the time before WW2 to the late 80s so you'll get a little history but it's more about family and relationships. It's not filled with violence, sex, or profanity, which is just another plus for me. I highly recommend it!

I can relate to so much in this novel: a close italian family of girls, librarians & a love of books, difficult female relationships but I was so disappointed. No spoilers but there was too mich brokenness for me. The reading was slow and painfully choppy. On a positive, it's not full of graphic sex, profanity, or violence.

Nothing memorable here. It's a quick read without too much gore. Maybe a decent beach read when you don't want to think too much.
