Historia
With the sweep and vitality of a great novel, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough presents the enthralling story of John Adams. This is history on a grand scale - an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Read by History Channel host Edward Herrmann!

riveting narrative of a great man
Revisado: 01-03-24
I was disappointed to find that this is an abridged version of this book, but still the parts narrated by the male narrator were beautifully done. The female narrator (not offensive in and of herself) was a jarring transition everytime she came in. So that is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. if you are wanting less of a dedication of time to this story, this is a good option.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

I could not turn this off and binged it in two days. For once, the vulgarity wasn't competitively gratuitous and added to the character. If you like scifi thrillers, don't miss this one.

Named a "national institution" by George Orwell, Dickens offers his most popular tale, of the orphan who is reared in a workhouse and runs away to London. A novel of social protest, a morality tale, and a detective story.

Historia
Violence in the Old Testament has long been a stumbling block for Christians and skeptics alike. God Is a Man of War offers a fresh interpretation of Old Testament accounts of violence, by exploring them through the twofold lens of Orthodox tradition and historical context. Father Stephen De Young examines what these difficult passages reveal about the nature of Christ and His creation, bearing witness to a world filled not only with pain and suffering - often of human making - but also with the love of God.

Concise and packs a punch
Revisado: 08-29-22
Loved this little read. Fr. Stephen brings his broad knowledge of the historical context of the Old Testament and his knowledge of translations of the ancient languages of the time together to give us a picture of what we are reading with our modern eyes. Easy to read prose. Just excellent. Highly recommend if this issue is one you are struggling with.

I listened to this in a single afternoon. I found it very informative, particularly the chapter about translations. definitely worth picking up if you want an early church perspective on reading Scripture.

No end of books these days offer us techniques for self-improvement. Taking a different tack, Robin Phillips shows that God meets us where we are, in the pain and heartache of the present moment. Instead of looking for a way to escape from hardship, we can cultivate an attitude of gratitude, peace, and self-acceptance that will transform our experience of suffering.

A book about gratitude that feels rule
Revisado: 07-25-21
This is a great book for those struggling to find contentment in difficult circumstances. None of that wishy washy modern self indulgent me time. The author relies on the writings of those who struggled in real adversity, such as Bonhoeffer, to articulate a path to thankfulness in spite of suffering. He also lays out a path to self acceptance in our brokenness that leads to real healing.

Historia
The Orthodox Christian tradition is filled with wisdom and guidance about the biblical path of salvation. Yet this guidance remains largely inaccessible to parents and often disconnected from the parenting challenges we face in our homes. Parenting Toward the Kingdom will help you make the connections between the spiritual life as we understand it in the Orthodox Church and the ongoing challenges of raising children.

The best parenting book I've read
Revisado: 08-20-18
This is the first parenting book I have read that truly respects who we are as a family growing together in Christ. no systems or gimmicks. Just firm limits, realistic expectations, and calling us to repentance when our kids (as well as ourselves) fall short. I'll give this to all the new parents in my life, and I only wish it had been written when we had our first child!
