I first read this book when i was around 10 and I’ve loved it since. It tackles difficult subjects and talks frankly about things like periods, child marriage, cultural and religious differences, and things like starvation.

It’s a great story, and I love this authors other books (Sea Of Trolls was my favorite series in middle school, and this book and that series are some of my favorite books to listen to while falling asleep every night)

I’ve listened to this book 20+ times (I’m autistic and adhd, I love background noise and listening to the same thing over and over).

The voice actor did a great job. I think the only thing I can complain about is that you can sometimes hear her breathe or make mouth sounds, like the audio wasn’t quite edited right (once in a while! it’s not too distracting).

oh, and I’m 29 - it’s definitely not just for kids! There’s a couple sensitive things (like injuries to people and animals, including dogs, and death) so if you’re intending for a younger kid to read this, it’s worthwhile reading it first just to make sure it’s age appropriate. I think it’s fine, but it can be upsetting and may lead to a necessary discussion and you should be prepared for that.

I like that there’s a 20 minute section at the end talking about the history. There’s a lot of short stores told by Nhamo throughout the book, which keeps things interesting and gives unique insights to her thought process.

Ableism from… a disabled character ?

I have enjoyed this book, for the most part. But one thing really, REALLY stuck out to me and I almost quit this book in the first 20 minutes… and that is the fact that the main character, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, is ableist and uses the r slur (not outright, but in portmanteaus, such as ‘teentard’ for a teenage r-word, and ‘huntard’ for a hunter) and ‘idiot’ to insult other characters. But it’s not framed as a bad thing, it’s said completely casually and the main character isn’t shown as in the wrong for saying those things. The only reason I kept going was because Audible wasn’t going to allow me to write a review so soon after starting, and I do want people to know that so they’re not caught completely off guard as I was. I am glad I kept going, just sad that was an issue in the first place.

I think, if memory serves, other ableist language was probably used (like ‘crippled’), but since the main character is physically disabled and that’s a big part of the plot, I don’t find that as big of a deal because you can reclaim slurs that are used to hurt you (but not slurs that you use to hurt others!).

It’s disappointing, because I was hoping ableism wouldn’t be present in a book like this.
That main character is physically disabled but not mentally disabled as far as I’m aware, but I am and it does hurt to hear slurs used so casually and not framed as being harmful or wrong. I know that’s something that can happen in gaming spaces, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay.

Otherwise I have enjoyed the story and I liked a lot of the side characters. It’s not a bad book at all, the ableism just ranks it lower for me than if those words hadn’t been used… I’m pretty simple when it comes to reviews - if I have a good time listening to the story and there’s not any major issues (like slurs or giant plot holes or glitches with the audio) it’s pretty much always an auto 5 star book, because what I value is my enjoyment and not necessarily the quality of the writing.

Idk, it just seems really off putting to use ableist language in a book where the main character is disabled and is meant to be sympathetic. It wasn’t just in a flashback either, where he could have grown from it, it was ‘real time’ during the story.

I love that the author narrates the book, especially since it’s Neil Gaiman.
I saw the movie first, so I already knew the story, but I really enjoy this audiobook and have listened to it several times.
I recommend both, the book and the movie, they’re both wonderful.

Overall pretty good, but lecture 54 is harmful

I've really enjoyed this audio course. I've listened to a lot of it on 1.5-2.2x speed. I really loved the first narrator, but the others just weren't as engaging to me. One of them either stutters a lot or had some editing issues, which could sometimes make it a bit hard to understand - not a problem that someone stutters of course, but I do think the resulting audiobook should at least be easily understandable. Possibly this was partly because of me listening to it sped up, but I don't normally have that problem with other narrators. I think some better editing could have really helped.

I have really enjoyed the different lectures, it's a lot of fun learning about the mythologies of other cultures.

Unfortunately, the narrator for lecture 54 uses a slur for trans people and just generally does not treat the subject of a person, who may have been transgender or gay, with much respect and it really pulled me out and was pretty upsetting. There's much better, more respectful ways to talk about it than the lecturer did, and I think it should be revised so that it does not contain a harmful, outdated term that is now used as a slur, and speaking of this person in a way that makes people in the LGBT+ community (hi, that's me) uncomfortable. The narrator also misgenders this person when assuming them to be trans, and also speaks badly of them if they're a cis gay person. It also just so happens this person is the villain of the myth, but the narrator also talks badly about the REAL PEOPLE from this culture that were lgbt+... not a good look, it was quite disrespectful, so I do not recommend this specific lecture to anyone, especially lgbt+ people. I don't think the myth itself was necessairly harmful, especially considering those people (trans and/or gay, the lecturer is confused on both and speaks disrespectfully either way) existed within that culture at the time, but the lecturer certainly was.

Otherwise I did enjoy the rest of the lectures. I wasn't planning on leaving a review until hearing the 54th lecture, because people need to know that kind of thing - especially lgbt+ people who DON'T want to feel disrespected just for existing, while trying to learn about mythology of the world. Like I said, the person talking COULD have talked about it respectfully, and I wouldn't have had a problem, they just didn't. There's still lots of Native American two spirit people existing now, so it's not like the lecturer couldn't have simply ASKED someone how to talk about them respectfully in this context.

Because of this, I am disappointed. People trying to learn shouldn't have to feel disrespected in such a way for daring to exist as queer, because the lecturer didn't bother to ask Native people how to speak respectfully on the subject.

I read this as a kid

I first read this book when I was a kid in school, and when I saw it here on Audible I knew I wanted to experience the story again. It's a children's book, but it doesn't necessairly FEEL like it. It's short, but the story is truly memorable and the narrator did a good job.

Dominic is in 5th grade, so probably 9 or 10. I believe I first read it at a similar age.

Please note, the author DOES use a slur (the g word for the Romani people) in chapter 5. This is a good opportunity to talk about slurs in a historical context if you're listening with kids. This word has been used as a slur for a long time, but many people still aren't aware it's a slur so it's important to educate kids on words they shouldn't use, because they're more harmful than they may sound. (It was not used to insult someone in the story, but it was used to describe someone - it's similar to describing a Black person with the n word, the only difference is that this slur is less well known).

I really enjoyed listening to this story, the narrator is fantastic (of course, he's a great actor and has a wonderful voice) and it's an interesting concept I really enjoyed
