Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

The only negative was that it had to end.
Revisado: 02-22-16
This was a great cap to a great series. Being able to keep the momentum and suspense going in a series is tough, but this one ended as well as a trilogy could. Just a fantastic series and wonderful book. It is one of those series where right when it is over, you're a little sad because you can never experience for the first time again.
In general regarding the series, it is a combination of The Hunger Games, epic fantasy and Heinlein (probably most similar to The Moon is a Harsh Mistress). The writing was great. The plot, action and character building were all strong---so it is a technically sound book. You love and hate the characters and become truly invested in their well being. Just extremely impressive all around.
Bravo Mr. Brown. I can't wait for your next series.
And I also will note that Tim Gerard Reynolds was great narrating as well. He's easily one of my top few favorite narrators, and was fantastic here.

Historia
Lane is a typical teenager - loving family, good grades, after-school job at the local animal hospital, martial arts enthusiast - but her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick. Why? Because she might be one herself. Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals - delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder. But with each visceral rush the line of self-control blurs. And then a young preschool teacher goes missing - only to return in parts.

Interesting and engaging, but not an original idea
Revisado: 09-10-15
I did enjoy the book. It was engaging throughout and well-read (hence the rating). But it would be impossible to go through it, as someone who has read/listened to the Dexter series, and not think that this was not a partial rip-off.
(Slight spoilers ahead, though no specifics.) And I'm not just talking about kind of the general feel of the book. The plot itself seems eerily similar to "Darkly Dreaminf Dexter". So close that it was more than coincidence.
Again, I really did enjoy the book and will likely get the next in the series. So it didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. I just found it interesting and slightly distracting. It wasn't just "inspired by" Dexter or similar to it. It was Dexter with a slightly varied plot and a teen girl main character.
That said, can't wait to check out the next one.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

I really can't decide if I like the Ex series better or books in the vein of The Fold and 14. Just great, interesting, original writing. And fantastic narration from one of my favorite narrators.

Revisado: 01-30-15
There were a few slow parts. A few parts where I wondered about what direction the book was taking. I even wondered what the next one in the series could possibly be about. But the ending. My God, the ending. Brought everything together and set up for a whale of a third book.
I don't want to say anymore than that at risk of spoiling something. You're one clever, ruthless b-stard Mr. Brown

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 07-31-14
I don't normally enjoy humor-fantasy. e.g. Try as I might, Terry Pratchett, as much as I appreciate his talent, doesn't do much for me. But I enjoyed this one from beginning to end. Equal parts funny, original and engaging. I look forward to the next one.

Best one so far
Revisado: 01-18-14
I love this series. My favorite zombie series and my favorite super hero series all tied into one. And this was Peter Clines best work in the series yet. I think this one gave the characters a bit more depth. Especially Stealth. Getting under the veil a bit more was cool. Can't wait for the next one.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

I don't know what else to say beyond the headline. This book makes my heart happy. It was sad and beautiful and compelling and simple. And it leaves you feeling precisely at the narrator feels. It touches you.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Something new and interesting
Revisado: 05-25-13
Really well written. I don't have a technical back ground or any scientific training experience, but I'm sure someone who did would appreciate this novel on a different level. The thing is, even not having that connection doesn't detract from the story or writing at all. Very fast-paced, intriguing and, sometimes, edge-of-your-seat exciting. Can't wait to see more from this author.

YA novel for everyone
Revisado: 05-25-13
I don't know why, but I didn't expect great things from this book. The magic system seemed, quite frankly, a little silly. And it was a YA novel. Granted, I really like YA sf, but Brandon Sanderson doing it? It just seemed odd. But he does a phenomenal job with it. Great, quick paced, page-turning story. Michael Kramer narrates beautifully. You can tell it is written for young adults, but that doesn't mean he dumbed down his writing or over-simplified anything. It is still excellent fantasy. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes sf, or just good writing in general.

Great story overall--elite time travel novel
Revisado: 04-17-13
This became my favorite time travel novel. It is, while amazing for the genre, and more generally in sf/fantasy, it is also a great piece of literature in and of itself, regardless of classification. With some philosophy mixed in.
