What would have made Your First Listen better?

I would like to have a choice of what book was presented.

What was most disappointing about the author’s story?

I have read many of these kinds of real stories as I work in law enforcement. Unfortunately, too many people are stalkers and have paranoid personalities that harass innocent victims. It was very true to life, but I do not enjoy reading about these kinds of psychotic people for entertainment.

What three words best describe the narrator’s voice?

Reassuring, pleasant, and easy to listen.

It was too short to edit.

I wish I could have heard a different story.

Believe in Thyself.

What other book might you compare Person or Persons Unknown to and why?

There have been many stories about people's identity crises. From man's earliest beginnings, Descartes questioned existence in his famous quote, "I think, therefore, I am." The epistemology of one's existence has been explored by scientists, poets, and writers for thousands of years. "If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?" Does a person have to be in the forest to hear the tree fall? Or does the sound occur no matter if anyone is there to observe the sound?

What about Stacy Keach and John Schneider ’s performance did you like?

Stacy does the intro and end just as Rod Serling did in the TV show. John Schneider's portrayal of a man who cannot understand why people do not recognize him was compelling and makes one feel strangely if the same thing would happen to the listener. John acted just as a reasonable person would act in that situation trying his best to secure his place in this world. He would not take anyone's explanation that he had a break with reality, but none of the evidence supported his view. The twist in the end was not anticipated. At that time, he became indignant just as his wife did in the early part of the story. Excellent performance, very visual, and entertaining.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, anyone would feel discomfort if his whole belief system were destroyed by his wife, mother, and employer not believing in his existence. I could actually feel the character's anxiety at finding that no one believed him. What I did not like was that there was no actual explanation for the reason that David Gourney's existence was in question.

Any additional comments?

Charles Beaumont was a prolific sci-fi writer for Twilight Zone eps, but I did not care for this story only because there was no explanation in the end. The twist was a typical kind of ending that leaves the listener thinking "what happened?" I prefer an ending that makes sense as in "Where is Everybody?" Rod Serling did not insult the audience's intelligence. Other writers often do, but it's not satisfying to the listener. John Schneider did an excellent job as usual in his portrayal of David Gourney fighting for his survival of existence. I would love to see John Schneider perform more of the Twilight Zone radio shows.

Where does Where Is Everybody? rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is only the third audiobook from Audible.com, but in comparison to others, I found it to be outstanding. It was clear, just the right length of time, and enjoyable.

What did you like best about this story?

First, I downloaded it because JOHN SCHNEIDER was the actor. Second, it was a Twilight Zone story, and I have watched all the episodes on TV several times over the years. This story, although dated by our 21st Century standards, was more of psychological study of socialization of man confined in a place without any sensory input. The first issue would have been how does man cope alone in space? That problem was a big one in the 1960s, but since that time, NASA and military have always incorporated teams in any space project involving time away from earth.

What about Stacy Keach and John Schneider ’s performance did you like?

Stacy narrates the story and pulls it back together in the end, just as Rod Serling did in the TV shows. His style is professional and his voice is perfect. JOHN SCHNEIDER portrayed a man scared to be alone, trying his best to search for companionship, and conveyed the meaning of "no man is an island." John has had an outstanding career as actor, singer, director, producer, and continually surprises me with his versatile style, eloquence, and resonant voice. He sang a few little ditties, but I wished he could have really belted out some songs in his own animated and unwavering style.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had seen this episode before on TV and knew exactly what was going to happen. However, it is still well-written for its time and although the science part of the experiment has been well-researched over several decades, scientists have found that man does need companionship and sensory deprivation can negatively impact anyone's psyche. One of the quotes in the beginning of the Stacy Keach narration should have been clearly stated as Jean Paul Sartre, but he was uncredited. That problem goes to the writing, not to the performances which were very well portrayed.

I would buy, rent, or download any media having to do with JOHN SCHNEIDER. This was a wonderful production of Twilight Zone series, and I have downloaded all the radio shows with John. I'm happy that the producers have made this series come alive on radio. The manner of acting made the listener "see" all the action and be a part of the description of all the details as the officer walked to the town, went in and out of business shops, and finally, feeling desperate as the officer contemplated his own demise. Thank you for giving these radio shows to the fans.
