Historia
Shortly before dusk on November 3, 1870, just as the ferryboat El Capitan was pulling away from its slip into San Francisco Bay, a woman clad in black emerged from the shadows and strode across the crowded deck. Reaching under her veil, she drew a small pistol and aimed it directly at a well-dressed man sitting quietly with his wife and children. The woman fired a single bullet into his chest. “I did it and I don’t deny it,” she said when arrested shortly thereafter. “He ruined me and my daughter.”

Historia
József Debreczeni, a prolific Hungarian-language journalist and poet, arrived in Auschwitz in 1944; had he been selected to go “left,” his life expectancy would have been approximately forty-five minutes. One of the “lucky” ones, he was sent to the “right,” which led to twelve horrifying months of incarceration and slave labor in a series of camps, ending in the “Cold Crematorium”—the so-called hospital of the forced labor camp Dörnhau, where prisoners too weak to work awaited execution.

The horror and degradation
Revisado: 02-07-24
In a supposedly civilized and cultured society, how could such horrible degradation of fellow human beings take place? It seems as if humanity is incapable of learning lessons, as what is seen in this book and related by the author, is still going on in parts of the world. There will be survivors of today’s version of Auschwitz, and hopefully those survivors will have the courage to relate their stories in the never ending. Hope that someday humankind will get the message, and will act with humanity towards others. .
The presenter does an excellent job, presenting this chilling and frightening piece of history.

Historia
The Soviet Union is gone, but its ghostly traces remain, not least in the material vestiges left behind in its turbulent wake. What was it really like to live in the USSR? What did it look, feel, smell, and sound like? In The Soviet Century, Karl Schlögel, one of the world's leading historians of the Soviet Union, presents a spellbinding epic that brings to life the everyday world of a unique lost civilization. A museum of—and travel guide to—the Soviet past, The Soviet Century explores in evocative detail both the largest and smallest aspects of life in the USSR.

Yes, it is long but,
Revisado: 05-27-23
Very much worth reading if one wants to grasp the inner workings and life within the Soviet system. In the West, particularly during the Cold War when we were all under the threat of mutually assured destruction from nuclear weapons, no one seemed to
fully grasp what life was like in the Soviet Union or how it came to be that way. The author does an excellent job of spelling out the evolution that came about from the Revolution. The narrator does a superb job with this book, and is perhaps one of the best narrators I have heard on Audible.

Positive message
Revisado: 02-03-23
This book provides a counter dose to the messages that are sent out by the new media and divisive politicians in this country. News media with their half hour evening news shows in particular, do not present the news, only opeds of specific stories, without going in depth, or making a thorough effort to present both sides of the story fairly. This is too often the case with police incidents. This book does an excellent job of dispelling some of the false narrative and simplistic views focused towards defunding the police and police officers performance. Clearly, we need more books like this that clarify where we are with policing in America and where we need to be.

Historia
In November 1987, a young couple on an overnight trip to Seattle vanished without a trace. A week later, the bodies of Tanya Van Cuylenborg and her boyfriend Jay Cook were found in rural Washington. It was a brutal crime, and it was the perfect crime: With few clues and no witnesses, an international manhunt turned up empty, and the sensational case that shocked the Pacific Northwest gradually slipped from the headlines.

Well done and detailed
Revisado: 12-14-22
This is a fascinating true crime story with exhaustive and well detailed research, leading to the conviction of a rapist and killer, who escaped detection for far too long. The author has done an excellent job, pulling together all of the details that spanned so many years.
