Misleading title. Not relaxing to listen to.
Revisado: 06-24-20
This is a book about meditation, not a recording to help you sleep. The short section in chair 4 that actually includes a guided meditation example completely lacks any hypnotic or relaxing quality.

one of the best sci fi so far this century
Revisado: 09-09-19
the good: ambitious in scope, mysterious and confusing (in a good way) fascinating premise. I was hooked right away. Disturbing trends in society seem to be destroying science and halting scientific progress. Scientists are committing suicide. But why? What is going on?
the bad: a little too ambitious at times, it loses the narrative flow going deep into side plots, histories, and an immersive video game experience. I was like, what about the central story line? Those characters we met before? it gets a little off track. Also, the unabridged reading results in some terrible moments where long strings of numbers keep getting repeated, which is not a good listening experience, or there is dialogue presented as a transcript, but the reader keeps saying the character name before speaking, which is tedious. But the audience for audiobooks is sceptical of abridged versions so maybe the producer felt they had no choice.
overall, great story, was always interested to return to it.

Not good as an audio book
Revisado: 08-12-19
Probably works fine if you are reading it normally, but the audio book was so dreadfully boring I couldn't pay attention while driving. Kept returning to it and trying again, but gave up. Clever idea for a story, but the reader is too dry and un-emotive, and the story is all conversations, developing very slowly. I think this won acclaim for its originality of concept, but it's not a good mystery novel, and it's not a good sci fi either.

surprised by what a good reader Gaiman is. the story is fun and never boring or slow, the reading is super, I like the musical interludes, whole thing was done with care and intention. really is an audiobook, not just a book read out loud.

The Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. But now the district is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end.

Enjoyed it
Revisado: 05-24-19
Really interesting take on alternate history / murder mystery - with a mostly Jewish and Native Alaskan "cast." Nice work, Mr. Chabon! The reader was a great fit for the Raymond Chandler vibe. There were a few times when the writing style didn't totally work as an audio book. Chabon loves descriptive metaphors and long descriptions of split second moments, which is part of why his writing is so good, but as audio book it sometimes slows down the pace a bit. In my experience plot-driven works best for audio, probably because I'm usually driving or doing dishes and not giving my full attention. So sometimes I got a little distracted or bored but the story and characters are so interesting that carried it through. Recommended!

Incredible book.
Revisado: 04-30-19
I've been going through Hugo award nominees from the past, so obviously I enjoy scifi, but to be fair most scifi is an interesting story, usually a bit cerebral, but with terrible writing. This one really stood out from the rest. Perhaps some will find it maybe a little overwritten (flowery?) but I was captivated by the writing quality and the inner thoughts of the main character and the nuanced complex relationships of the characters. It's like an author who was a fan of epic scifi decided to show the world what it would be like to actually make scifi approach the level of Novel (with a capital N). It's also the best reading I've ever heard. Amazing reader. Really captures the existential angst of the characters, and when necessary, he really performs... You'll notice it most with the little umms and ahhs in the dialogue, he nails it. The other reason this is more like A Novel and less scifi is that despite the bizarre premise - something drastic has suddenly happened to the earth, and the stars have all disappeared - the main story arc is about the relationships, and the psyches of these people put in this new troubling context, the unrequited love, the familial disapproval, the different ways everyone responds to having some unknown external force put humanity into a total state of helpless uncertainty. Good stuff. Highly recommended.

Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleo-anthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer, called a Companion, implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. But it can't help his fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder.

Really enjoyed it.
Revisado: 03-13-19
Great reader. The story uses an implausible quantum computing accident to set up a delightful series of conversations between people from this Earth, and a parallel Earth, which allows us all to contemplate how our civilization might have turned out differently. There's a minor plot device involving a rape which didn't ring true for me, maybe because of the male author, but if you can ignore that, the rest is a great read/listen.

Otto isn't an ordinary penguin: he is the first penguin chick to be born that year, which means that it is his job to look after all the other young penguins. But out in the snow and ice of Antarctica there is an awful lot to learn, and Otto has to discover for himself how to swim, dive, and catch fish before he can teach anyone else. And how will he do that when all the grown-ups are too busy to help?

Not quite right for 2 year old
Revisado: 03-06-19
Lovely reader although she has a heavy Irish accent which was a bit challenging for my 2.5 year old. Also, most of this story is Penguins talking to each other, which is not enough action for my little one, I think. On the plus side, there's nothing scary. Hard to find good audio books for very young children for long drives. This one can work but Frog and Toad or Magic Tree house are much better. I can't speak to how this would be received by an older child, probably would be great.

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

Got bored, couldn't finish.
Revisado: 02-04-19
Several chapters in, Nothing has happened except for lots of very British characters complaining about some aristocrat who has been ordering everyone back in time to look for trinkets. No hint yet as to why it's important. Main character can't remember what it is they're supposed to do. seems to me the author can't remember that readers need something tantalizing early on to keep them interested. Throw me a bone! I stopped reading.
