Historia
The Lady and Her Monsters by Roseanne Motillo brings to life the fascinating times, startling science, and real-life horrors behind Mary Shelley's gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein. Montillo recounts how - at the intersection of the Romantic Age and the Industrial Revolution - Shelley's Victor Frankenstein was inspired by actual scientists of the period: curious and daring iconoclasts who were obsessed with the inner workings of the human body and how it might be reanimated after death.

Incredible deep dive into macabre Victorians
Revisado: 01-23-24
Absolutely riveting and thorough account of so much deliciously macabre and dramatic details surrounding Mary Shelley during her life! I learned so much and understand now a lot of the darker preoccupations people had those days. The narrator was perfect for the book! Her cadence and accent were so soothing and her male quotations voice was sufficiently distinct without coming across ridiculous.

Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

Funny yet serious
Revisado: 01-09-24
I enjoyed her dry humor and taking the piss out of ancient ideas. She made following the names of all these Romans easier than in other historical audiobooks I've tried. The subject matter was very interesting and I learned a lot of new things. I wish there could have been more about common people, but as she says in the book repeatedly, we don't know enough about them because they weren't important enough to the Romans to write anything about. The stuff at the end about the executions and coliseum and crucifixions was ghastly and so interesting!

Fun pirate story mixed with boring modern story
Revisado: 01-05-24
I enjoyed the pirate story part, though it was rather sanitized IMO. But the more modern day segments were boring and predictable. Daddy issues and gay panic reiterated over and over and over again. Descriptions of things repeated over and over again. Felt like she was trying to pad out the book and the pay off was not worth it. By the last 20% I was listening out of spite and literally yelling in my car to just GET ON WITH IT. I had thought there would be more fantastical elements from a description I read about it blending truth and fiction, but I was wrong. This was a lot like The Lost Apothecary, in that the historical bits were cool but the modern day I wanted to slap the MC and tell her to grow up and develop a personality.

In the first-ever history of the world's female buccaneers, Pirate Women: the Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled the Seven Seas tells the story of women, both real and legendary, who through the ages sailed alongside - and sometimes in command of - their male counterparts. These women came from all walks of life but had one thing in common: a desire for freedom.

Too much unrelated fluff!!
Revisado: 09-05-23
I guess because there isn't a whole lot of actual historical data about women pirates, the author felt the need to pad the book out with quite a bit of tangents into other historical happenings like suffrage and the CCP, even when it really had nothing to do with the pirate she was talking about. Half the book wasn't about female piracy, with a quarter of the book being about male pirates. I dunno, I guess she needs to give context for something but it just felt like... why are we talking about laws in China that were passed in 1994??? My mind wandered so much and when I came back to it I couldn't remember if she was talking about a real woman or a fictional account and in the end there was even a bunch of spoilers for some pirate movies that I had to skip bc I haven't caught on on the PoTC series! I am glad that I got this with Audible membership and didn't waste my credit on it.

Fun story but...
Revisado: 08-02-23
I really wanted more female piracy!! It was a fun adventure, though not as engaging or twisty turny as the first in series. There were too many perfect coincidences and deus ex machina events, but the writing itself is good and engaging. I look forward to more work from this author and I'll pretty much listen to ANYTHING Moira Quirk narrates. that's how I found this series!! her work on The Locked Tomb series (5 star reads!!) made her a favorite, up there with Peter Kenny.

We evolved to eat berries rather than bagels, to live in mud huts rather than condos, to sprint barefoot rather than play football - or did we? Are our bodies and brains truly at odds with modern life? Although it may seem as though we have barely had time to shed our hunter-gatherer legacy, biologist Marlene Zuk reveals that the story is not so simple. Popular theories about how our ancestors lived - and why we should emulate them - are often based on speculation, not scientific evidence. Armed with a razor-sharp wit and brilliant, eye-opening research, Zuk takes us to the cutting edge of biology to show that evolution can work much faster than was previously realized.

Narrator really grated my nerves...
Revisado: 07-18-23
I love this kind of content taking new age and woo trends etc to task based on actual science! I was taken in by paleo years ago as well, so I enjoyed hearing about how wrong that all was in the end lol. My dad still does the "caveman diet" but it actually gets him to eat salad so I won't burst his bubble there. The information in this book is great, but the narrator just really got under my skin. Something about her intonation and emphasis felt like she was being condescending and it just grated my nerves to listen to. I had a hard time focusing on the information bc my brain would just check out. I know it isn't the info dump, bc I absolutely devoured Adam Rutherford's "History of Everyone Who Has Ever Lived" and LOVED his narration. It literally took me 6 months to finish listening to this book, but I read Adam's in less than 1 month. Your mileage may vary about the narrator, but listen to a sample before you buy the audio version.

nothing new, meh
Revisado: 02-13-23
This is basically like the first 10 minutes of xmen, but it doesn't go anywhere interesting at all. It's a generic and overdone trope, especially compared to the other stories in this collection. I was bored and the narrator sounded bored too, but I guess that's how a despondent teen should sound. just meh
