Historia
On the island of Sicily amid the Peloponnesian War, the Syracusans have figured out what to do with the surviving Athenians who had the gall to invade their city: they’ve herded the sorry prisoners of war into a rock quarry and left them to rot. Looking for a way to pass the time, Lampo and Gelon, two unemployed potters with a soft spot for poetry and drink, head down into the quarry to feed the Athenians if, and only if, they can manage a few choice lines from their great playwright Euripides. Before long, the two mates hatch a plan to direct a full-blown production of Medea.

Totally original, deeply moving
Revisado: 01-28-25
In a time of cookie cutter repeated themes and tropes and ridiculously poorly written books, this truly stands out. No carbon copy or another light historical fiction it is a triumph of imagination based on historical realities but focusing on the experiences of the marginalized. It is sometimes excruciating to listen to - going from comedy to tragedy, good to despair, and a heartfelt reminder of the importance of common humanity and theater that creates bonds between people.

I love Royce and Hadrian. They are the best! The story seemed a bit off in its pacing sometimes, unlike others; there is only so much Royce/Gwen terror of each other that makes sense, for example. Thankfully, the novella hits its stride before too long (even the reader seemed to relax).

Repetition in quality with characters
Revisado: 01-07-25
Sanderson has a terrific imagination and work building skills. I liked the chronology of days as a structure to the narrative. However, characters tended to constantly be repeating the same issues; this can be tiresome or cringe inducing - e.g. Kalidin’s progress is great but devolves into too much “therapy speak” as it goes on. At times it felt as though it was visualized as a game rather than a book, although it never loses momentum it at times does so at the expense of characterization. Ending was interesting but a downer with 5 books to go??

The harsh realities of war
Revisado: 12-19-24
This is incredibly well written and insightful while being hard to get through the honesty of brutality that it portrays. I didn’t much like the constant creepy voices of feral children - some was fine but it got to be too much. It is a tragedy, however reimagined.

Historia
By 330 B.C.E., Alexander the Great had reached the pinnacle of success. Or so it seemed. He had defeated the Persian ruler Darius III and seized the capital city of Persepolis. His exhausted and traumatized soldiers were ready to return home to Macedonia. Yet Alexander had other plans. He was determined to continue heading east to Afghanistan in search of his ultimate goal: to reach the end of the world.

Historia
This insightful look at the life of Henry V and the Battle of Agincourt casts new light on a period in history often held up as legend. A great English hero, Henry V was lionized by Shakespeare and revered by his countrymen for his religious commitment, his sense of justice, and his military victories. Here, noted historian and biographer Ian Mortimer takes a look at the man behind the legend and offers a clear, historically accurate, and realistic representation of a ruler who was all too human.

The narrative style
Revisado: 11-11-24
I appreciated the insight this approach gave to Henry V. It was sometimes just too much data to attend to closely, though, especially as his character was less than appealing. The scholarship is impeccable, and the strength is the correlation of all events taking place in 1415.

Historia
Centuries on, what the Reformation was and what it accomplished remain deeply contentious. Peter Marshall's sweeping new history argues that 16th-century England was a society neither desperate for nor allergic to change, but one open to ideas of "reform" in various competing guises. This engaging history reveals what was really at stake in the overthrow of Catholic culture and the reshaping of the English Church.

The even handed and detailed handling of the issues
Revisado: 10-27-24
The scholarship is first rate; the balance between different ideas and beliefs, the involvement of the historical background without it taking the place of the central conflicts in belief of English Christianity up to and through the Tudor period. This is a book that is best appreciated by those who have some knowledge of both English history and theological ideas.

We tend to think of the Middle Ages as a dark, backward, and unchanging time characterized by violence, ignorance, and superstition. By contrast, we believe progress arose from science and technological innovation, and that inventions of recent centuries created the modern world. We couldn't be more wrong.

The metaphor of the horizon
Revisado: 09-25-24
The narration is superb - passionate and clear, engaging the listener. The approach is interesting as much for the intent as the realization of it: a social history that takes the period seriously and yet despite this sometimes cannot resist reading the contemporary into the past. For the general reader, I would hope they explore further; for the more specialized reader, it presents interesting ways of seeing the Middle Ages, but remains in some ways too chained to contemporary ways of seeing humanity. The importation and generalization of secular/sacred and the literacy devoted to one writer were annoying to one with a deep knowledge of the period and of its theology. Nevertheless I applaud the effort and the purpose and the passion of the writer.

Wonderful characters in a great time and place
Revisado: 08-31-24
The setting was superbly realized - the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance and NYC in the 20s! For a novella, the characters had depth and the story intricate. I loved it! Please, Mr. Aaronovitch all of the Rivers characters are like friends now - don’t just put them aside or relegate them to graphic formats. We would miss them!
