Whiney and unlikable
Revisado: 04-12-25
I have finally discovered the difference between Dick and Felix Francis books. Dick Francis created protagonists who were imperfect yet of solid character. They universally have a heart and soul that make them appealing - we want them to succeed and solve their mysteries. Felix, by contrast, creates protagonists with whining attitudes and shallow souls.
Guilty Not Guilty has a clever plot to the very end, but the man we are to be pulling for is despicable and rude. It is painful to listen to his abrupt and inconsiderate exchanges. I almost despaired of learning the ending because it was so unpleasant to listen to him whining and lashing out at everyone he encounters.
I’ll ALWAYS highly recommend Dick Francis books, but I’ll not read any more of Felix books.

Historia
Hallelujah, the new edition audiobook is the remarkable story of one of the greatest events in musical history, the creation of George Frederic Handel's masterpiece, "Messiah". Composed in just twenty-four days, Handel's Grand Oratorio, which rendered him immortal, was birthed in the darkest and most desperate hours of his life. His health was failing. Critics ridiculed him. Creditors hounded him. Enemies persecuted him. Pride had nearly destroyed him.

Historia
One gorgeous autumn day, Harrison discovers that his wife—the sweet, funny, loving mother of their three daughters, a woman “who’s spent just about every Sunday of her life in a church”—is having an affair with a family friend. This revelation propels the hysterical, heartbreaking events in How to Stay Married, casting our narrator onto “the factory floor of hell,” where his wife was now in love with a man who “wears cargo shorts, on purpose.” What will he do? Kick her out?

It’s so real and honest and captivating. Life changing. The language is a little colorful at times, but almost sounds appropriate in context. Part of the honesty.

Characters have zero depth
Revisado: 06-04-24
The plot was good - but the characters were so shallow. I grew weary of constantly second guessing himself. The girlfriend was so pushy about sex it reflected on main character that he had no other interests. The whole story wore me out.

Sweet story - immature adults
Revisado: 02-06-24
I loved the concept of this book and I finished it to know how it ended … but there was so much junior-high-sounding crushes and conversation amongst the adults that I grew weary of listening to it. The characters felt shallow as a result - although there was much potential for in-depth development, considering the backgrounds of each of the main characters. It wore me out. Don’t particularly recommend it.

Historia
John Blake grew up in a Black neighborhood in inner-city Baltimore that became the setting for the HBO series The Wire. There he became a self-described “closeted biracial person,” hostile toward white people while hiding the truth of his mother’s race. The son of a Black man and a white woman who met when interracial marriage was still illegal, Blake knew this much about his mother: She vanished from his life not long after his birth, and her family rejected him because of his race. But at the age of seventeen, Blake had a surprise encounter that uncovered a disturbing family secret.

We can never stop learning about life and racism - this is a beautifully written book about the author’s life of struggles and victories and everything in between. I learned a lot and found a new perspective on some things.
I’m not always a fan of author’s reading their own books, but this hit the spot.

Lusting after his cousin?!?
Revisado: 11-10-22
Not my fave dick Francis book - and I’ve listened to all that are available. The plot is good, but drags a bit. But the story line about being in love with his cousin was just creepy. And it kept cropping up, chapter after chapter.

Kinda flat?
Revisado: 11-07-22
It may be reading it myself would have had different impact, but listening to this book felt at times like watching a cheesy hallmark movie. It was interesting at times, but seemed not much depth of character development. Perhaps all the hype for this book raised my expectations too much.

Missing Dick Francis
Revisado: 10-22-22
Great story, but the characters seem shallow compared to books by Dick. Felix will hopefully improve, and the narrator is excellent - I just missed the depth of previous characters - and I didn’t enjoy the repeated sexual references that sounded more immature than the characters were supposed to be. The protagonist seemed needy more than strong overall.
