Historia
It’s the early 1960s, and the newly built Berlin Wall looms large. British intelligence officer Alec Leamas, caught in its shadow, feels the chill all too keenly: the preceding years have seen nearly every member of his Berlin spy network either murdered or captured. To him, the prospect of a desk job feels more like solace than purgatory. When he’s summoned to London by Control, it seems as though he’s finally being called home.

Captivating, stone cold spy thriller

LeCarre brings the Cold War into direct view with masterful writing and intriguing plot twists that, while stunning, somehow ring true.
A fascinating read, narrated expertly.

Far exceeded my expectations
Revisado: 02-06-25
I began this book with a healthy dose of skepticism. I rarely venture into romance-adjacent audio books. But I’m so happy I took the plunge.
Fantastic writing and a gripping albeit mildly (and I stress mildly) formulaic ending. And it goes without says the narration is as great as it gets.
The author’s note at the end is fascinating too! Highly recommended.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Masterful - and frighteningly prescient - storytelling

Roth’s powers of storytelling are prodigious. The parallels to present day politics are uncanny and frightening. Highly entertaining read.

Historia
In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger. When she discovers she is pregnant–and that her lover is married–she accepts an offer of marriage from a gentle, sickly minister passing through on his way to Japan. But her decision to abandon her home, and to reject her son's powerful father, sets off a dramatic saga that will echo down through the generations. Profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty.

Grew on me slowly and captivated me by the end
Revisado: 11-16-24
The beginning was a bit of a slog for me but I was completely immersed by the midway point. While the writing felt stilted at times, I felt so connected to several of the characters (somewhat surprising for a white male Texan like me).
I’m a fan of Sandra Oh as an actor but was nonplussed by her narration. It was fine but uninspiring.
I loved learning about Korean and Japanese history and culture. I am motivated to continue learning more.

As children, the three siblings—Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally—feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.

But she is not like her affable, easygoing husband. By turns outspoken, then vulnerable, she struggles to form bonds with the people she meets—and the landscape she crosses has radically changed. Life affirming

A beautiful send off of the Harold Fry stories. Until now Maureen was, to me, distant and troubling. Yet so in need of compassion. Her journey told here is life affirming. Recommend for anyone who enjoyed the first two books in this series.
The narration is superb as well.

Astonishingly Fine Writing and Narration - An American Masterpiece
Revisado: 01-07-24
Read this now if you are a lover of great literature. I’m in awe of Daniel Mason’s command of language, soaring imagination and creative audacity. True, the story requires some effort and attention by the reader / listener, and a healthy dose of patience. The payoff in return is a superbly rich reading experience.
I suspect the best audience for this book trends to the more highbrow. I frequently felt compelled to re-listen to extended passages to capture as much nuance and meaning as possible. For those who seek an easy read or formulaic story and characters (no judgment - to each her own), then this may not be your cup of tea.
The narration is also world class. Each narrator embodies their story perfectly. Kudos to the producer who cast these narrators. It’s a sublime listening experience every step of the journey.
I hope Daniel Mason wins a Pulitzer for this magnificent work. It’s a masterpiece of American literature.

Historia
God Save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become.

Tried and true Texas
Revisado: 11-09-23
Five years now since its publication, God Save Texas remains a seminal work for anyone seeking to understand the heart and soul of the Lone Star State.
I was born and raised here, yet this book greatly expanded my understanding of my home state and, indeed, of my own psyche.
Wright brings forth an oft overlooked dimension of Texas life, culture and politics which is greatly misunderstood. Why? Because so many charlatans (especially of the political variety) are permitted to perpetuate the old stereotypes. God willing, we will some day rise above them on the wings of patron saints like Larry Wright.
Texas forever!

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Underwhelmed
Revisado: 06-15-23
Ishiguro is a brilliant author. The concept of the book is intriguing and topical. The narration is first class. Yet there is a hollowness to the book’s world and a thinness to the characters that left me feeling underwhelmed.
I liked this book and am glad I read it, but I didn’t love it.

The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

Virtuoso Writing / Terrific Ensemble Narration
Revisado: 06-15-23
For those who enjoyed Goon Squad, this is required reading. And for those who haven’t read both, you really should.
Egan has a genius for drawing connections in time and among engrossing characters that is a joy to decipher. True, you have to put some thought into it. This is not a passive reading or listening experience. But if you do, you’ll be richly rewarded.
The ensemble cast of narrators really enhances the listening experience too. With so many characters to keep sorted, the frequent narrator changes prove both helpful and entertaining.
