Reads like a collection of short stories
Revisado: 03-29-25
This book was interesting and a little different than some of the other books by the same author. While the book is technically 1 continuous story it reads almost like a collection of short stories. Amber and Jack visit strange phenomenons and each one is like its own story. I enjoyed them all but some grabbed my attention more than others which is why I went for 4 stars. I found this book enjoyable and the narrator is fantastic! He does an amazing job with all the voices. It’s a fun listen and I would recommend it.

In the heart of the South Pacific lies Point Nemo, the most desolate and remote place on Earth. At its core is a dead zone, devoid of life, where government agencies crash their obsolete satellites and space stations, confident they won't harm a soul. When the International Space Station suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets through the atmosphere, it's here that Mission Specialist Julie Rohr, an astrobiologist studying living space dust called xylem, finds herself marooned. Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

Exciting!
Revisado: 03-14-25
I love science fiction, over the top action and humor. This story was a perfect mix of all those things with splash’s of horror. I appreciated the humor to break it up, I think if it was solid horror while awesome may have been too intense for me. If it’s ever made into a movie or show I’d 100% watch it.

His grandmother isn’t able to finish the book and Dov promised he’d complete it so fans won’t be disappointed—a task that’s harder than he ever imagined.

Kinda boring
Revisado: 12-27-24
I struggled to finish this one but it was enjoyable enough to see it through to the end. I will say if it wasn’t a free one I would have sent it back. I really struggled with the male narrator. I think I’ve heard him before and he’s done well but for this character he just had this super annoyed tone to his voice the whole time and at parts that it didn’t really make sense. I understand the male character is supposed to be going through a hard time it just got grating. Personally I wouldn’t recommend this one.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Clever main story, didn’t need the CODAs
Revisado: 12-19-24
I’ve listened to several of Scalzis books and for the most part I enjoy them. I think he has a fun way of taking a science fiction concept and making a fun story out of it. Usually they’re funny, clever plot, and light hearted (for the genre). This one delivered on that front for the primary story and I really enjoyed it. For me personally, I didn’t enjoy the CODAs at the end. They felt like a 180 in both writing style and tone, it got much more serious and honestly a bit too sad, especially in contrast to the first 2/3 of the book. Other reviewers mentioned this I would agree the author needs to find a better way to write dialogue.it becomes extremely repetitive, especially in audio form to hear “…he said” ….”she said…” back a forth over and over.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Boring and Slow
Revisado: 12-08-24
I wanted to like this one because it got such great reviews. I kept thinking it would turn around as so many said it’s a slow burn but worth it. This book had glimmers of interesting moments and I do appreciate the depth of Britt Marie but I will say this troupe is a little played out. There are so many stories of the main character being a grump with few people liking them only to see them find people who change them and they impact others. For me this book was sunk cost fallacy, it was a struggle to finish but I was already so far in figured I’d at least have to do so. Wouldn’t recommend this one.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Couldn’t finish this one
Revisado: 11-19-24
The story had its moments at the beginning and I was curious to see where it went but this one dragged on for me. I’m personally not a wild fan of enemies to lovers tropes and this one was a bit clunky. In one scene the main characters are having a moment of connection and vulnerability and then the next scene they’re making snide comments as if scene before never happened. The beef between them felt very juvenile and then the inner monologues of finding the other one hot was just forced to indicate to the reader oh there’s lingering feelings under the middle school actions. I finally gave up and didn’t finish this book because I didn’t need to see what happened. Honestly the more interesting story is the male character and his Narcissistic mother, make that a book and it would be way better.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Cozy and Inspiring
Revisado: 11-03-24
I wasn’t sure what to expect but considering this was the first option under feel good and had tens of thousands of positive reviews I figured it was worth a shot. The characters are all so well developed and it’s so fun to see how their stories end up intertwining in a beautiful way. Marcellus is a treat and you can’t help but falling in love with an Octopus. The only reason I gave this 4 stars was while I certainly enjoyed this story it didn’t quite grip my soul like some stories do. But trust me, you will not be disappointed you listened to this book.

I just couldn’t stay with this one
Revisado: 10-24-24
I really wanted to like this book because I’m generally a big sci-fi fan but this one was a bit of a struggle. I first felt conflicted with some of the moral of waking up in a period of extreme religion and both in the future that has this great technology yet free will is basically non existent. Then we got to space and that part was a non issue but once the “Bobs” started splitting it lost me. I got so confused on who was who and what time period things were happening in relationship to each other. Honestly what kept me in this as long as I listened was Ray Porter. One of my favorite narrators! If you like sci-fi and not sure about this one, honestly check out project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I cannot say enough good things about that book!

A fun continuation for the first book
Revisado: 09-28-24
I will admit this second book wasn’t quite as endearing to me as the first one but I think in the second one there was a lot more OP hate speak from a very unlikeable character which made it harder to get wrapped up in the fun of the adventure. I realize it’s all fiction but the cult True Hands in the book is a little too real world for comfort and I found myself getting upset that people are really like that vs getting lost in the fiction of it all. But I’m still liking this series and excited to see where it goes.

Historia
Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

I really enjoyed this story. The OP is such a clever plot and Gretch as our main heroine is perfect. She’s sarcastic and witty and is very enjoyable to go along this adventure with. Highly recommend this book.
