beyond disappointed, I almost don't even want to read the rest of the series. a totally unnecessary addition to the series. I knew it wouldn't be what I was wanting when I read the description and saw it would be from Willa's perspective but everything is extremely redundant. nothing new. nothing interesting. don't waste you money, I'm never pre ordering an Armentrout book again and will be checking reviews before I listen.

This book's author needs to be on a watch list. This story is about "love" prevailing or in better words it's about a 7 year old traumatized girl (Wavy) being groomed by a full grown adult and her immediate family being okay with it because they are negligent and abusive. The story is obviously written in a way to make the reader favor these two characters and dislike the people in the story that see their relationship as wrong (as pedophilia, which it IS). Tossed in some queer baiting at the end for fun. This is not a book detailing what Wavy's experience is getting groomed and growing up in the environment she did, it's truly written to make you root for her and her abuser to end up together. Disturbing. The voice actors keeps a weird little girl/ baby voice for Wavy even when she's 19 and speaking more than she ever has. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK

First things first because I'm seeing tw but not seeing what they are for (this doesn't ruin the plot) so - TW: SA AND DV
It's hard to not love a story that's performed by these voice actors! I mean they're just incredible and it's so hard going from these two to a book recorded with awful audio quality and no personality. Carlton does an amazing job with her fem lead (per usual) and it's always refreshing to deviate from the classic clueless woman trope to something more modern that showcases strength as well as faults.
As far as the story line and writing goes, Carlton does a fair job of expressing what unfortunately so many people experience through the main character "River". She goes through a lot of dirty small details that abuse encompasses and how anyone can become a victim. The plot is pretty predictable but definitely not overly simple. If you like a dark (and I really mean dark) romance then anything from H.D Carlton is a must!

this review is really for the first 3 books in this series (which is where I stopped listening, I don't suggest even going that far)! SPOILERS! Weird racist and insensitive themes but what else do you expect from a series written in the 90s. the concept of this story is interesting to me, I love witches but there is more than one time the author includes back story of slave plantations for the main family in this series while simultaneously wanting you to be charmed by them and root for them because they were "nice" to their slaves. The narrator uses a stereotypical voice for an old black woman in the story as well. THE WHOLE PLOT IS ALSO BASED AROUND INCEST AND STATUTORY R@PE! Just way too weird to still enjoy the story.
