Algorithms and apps analyze data and tell you how to beat the traffic, what books to buy, what music to listen to, and even who to date—often with great results. But what do you do when you face the big decisions of life—the "wild problems" of who to marry, whether to have children, where to move, how to forge a life well-lived—that can’t be solved by measurement or calculation? In Wild Problems, beloved host of EconTalk Russ Roberts offers puzzled rationalists a way to address these wild problems.

He suggests ways to achieve fulfillment in emotional, physical, and professional relationships. By redefining his priorities, any man can create the life he always wanted.

Dated, old material!
Revisado: 01-07-17
This may have a tiny bit of relevance for 1 in 200 males. The material is 1). Subjective 2). Circa 2000...before Social Media.
I'd recommend Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari for a current perspective.
There's little to no 'science' or references to studies (a huge problem now days) regarding the author's statements.
It's a short book. But, I considered a refund several times... highly unusual for me. The 'I refer to this as Vagaphobia' statement was one refund point. Moronic!

Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacker lead an ordered, sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: He is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine.

Historia
In Proof, Adam Rogers reveals alcohol as a miracle of science, going deep into the pleasures of making and drinking booze—and the effects of the latter. The people who make and sell alcohol may talk about history and tradition, but alcohol production is really powered by physics, molecular biology, organic chemistry, and a bit of metallurgy—and our taste for those products is a melding of psychology and neurobiology.

The Science of Booze! YES!
Revisado: 09-26-15
What did you love best about Proof?
There's a huge level of naivety regarding 'booze'. This is a deep dive into several elements of 'Booze'. The everyday beer or wine. The dark liquors. The processes involved. There's a lot there. This could have gone on and on or branched off into hundreds of different rabbit holes.
What did you like best about this story?
The quest for the cure... for the 'HANG OVER'.
What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?
Sean did a fine job. There are obvious editing errors as Sean starts or stops a segment. Nothing overly annoying.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. This isn't a page turner. More of an interesting 'tech' manual on 'Booze'.

Historia
Colin Quinn has noticed a trend during his decades on the road - that Americans' increasing political correctness and sensitivity have forced us to tiptoe around the subjects of race and ethnicity altogether. Colin wants to know: What are we all so afraid of? Every ethnic group has differences, everyone brings something different to the table, and this diversity should be celebrated, not denied. So why has acknowledging these cultural differences become so taboo?

Nope. No Thank You.
Revisado: 09-26-15
What would have made The Coloring Book better?
This was depressing. The expectations were 'FUNNY'.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Memory Man
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Colin Quinn?
Quinn narrated alright. His narrated about his sad, pitiful existence. His alcohol abuse. The abuse of his acquaintances. Depressing, depressing and more depressing.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Coloring Book?
You can't un-see, un-read, un-hear what you've already indulged in. Hearing what I've heard, I would not have chosen this. It's below mediocre on the humor side and depressing on the 'auto-biography' side.
Any additional comments?
Would I recommend this? NOPE. Could I tell a friend why I'd skip this? Yes. I'd be embarrassed to tell my fellow readers that I have this book. Did I laugh out loud once? NOPE.

Got a refund. No science. If it was on wiki, it would have all the warnings. The author sites few (if any) references, studies or academy. 'There was this one college student that ate a bottle of no doz'..... that sort of drivel. This was purely a waste of time and money.

Historia
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world’s biggest companies—and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable.

Free Kevin, but chop off his fingers and tongue.
Revisado: 04-18-15
What did you like best about this story?
It's a bitter sweet story. As an IT pro, I want to punch this guy in the head. As an IT pro, it's important to give credit to Kevin as he was one of the first to expose the vulnerabilities of technology (new and old). The story itself is interesting from a retrospective view in that Kevin's antics where viewed as magical and mystical. By today's standards, he looks like a common thief, a huge nuisance and a decent CON man.
Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Ray did an EXCELLENT job. Smooth and articulate.
Was Ghost in the Wires worth the listening time?
...yes, this is important reading for any nerd. Kevin got away with a lot of criminal acts. His perspective (in retrospect) is that the general public was overly paranoid. '...just doing it for fun...' However, what he did was WRONG, unethical, intrusive, criminal and he KNEW it.
...but I'm the guy that would love to chop the fingers off of spammers, criminal grade hackers and malware devs.
Any additional comments?
Woz wrote the forward for this... he's one of my all time hero's in the biz. Again, bittersweet. If Woz thinks this guy (Kevin) is alright, then... grant mercy on Kevin's nerd soul. On the other hand, was Woz 'Socially Engineered' by Kevin...probably yes?

In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency’s widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security....

Snowden's alright - the story isn't over yet.
Revisado: 04-11-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Greenwald spends a majority of first portion of the book admitting his lack of technical prowess, his unwillingness to embrace (Snowden’s) constant prodding to use encrypted forms of communication, etc. He discounts himself in this manner throughout, thus undermining his side of this story. There’s quite a bite of unnecessary drama (insisting on publishing under my deadlines, my terms) throughout. Greenwald must have insisted that this be published ‘AS IS’ without a professional editors consultation.
"Who do I think would enjoy this book" - Any other narcissistic 'reporter'.
What was most disappointing about Glenn Greenwald’s story?
Very self indulgent. While toting the 'Snowden wanted to make certain this wasn't about Snowden...it's about abuses'... the author could have followed that mantra. Is this about Greenwald and his 'scoop' or is it about exposing abuses.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Nope...
Any additional comments?
I'd picked this up with the intent of gaining knowledge about 'Snowden' and his adventures / misadventures. I'll keep looking. I'm interested in the ONGOING ramifications of Snowden's willingness and ability to 'blow the whistle'.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Gillian Flynn on Prozac. This twisty tale would've been more appealing to me with a lot less introspective whining, some better character development and a lot more spice (murder, mayhem and gratuitous sex).

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

My favorite Martian...story ever
Revisado: 06-30-14
Would you listen to The Martian again? Why?
Yes...it's full of complex and interesting detail. Think McGyver on crack with a fantastic sense of humor.
What other book might you compare The Martian to and why?
I've got a FAT library... HUGE! I can't think of anything that comes close. It did remind me (remotely) of the movie GRAVITY...but this story was much, much better. I'm looking forward to the movie....oh yeah...
What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The typical...if I would have actually READ the book, I'd have missed out on all of the fantastic chores I was able to do WHILE listening to Bray's narration. He does an excellent job!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The indomitable spirit of the protagonist. Although fiction...it made me think "I'm a wimp...cause I would have totally give up at this part". The protagonist goes through trails and tribulations that where daunting...and all with a sense of humor.
Any additional comments?
READ IT. I'd recommending this to all my book buddies.
