Great Story
Revisado: 02-08-25
Romance, suspense, twisting plot, murder, danger on the high seas, what more could a reader ask for. Wonderful debut novel. Can't wait to hear more from this author as her writing skills improve. The narration was weak, but overall, it was a great read.

Bitter-sweet. Loved the way she had dual stories. Johanna was a passionate woman of great determination. I think it's wonderfult that her decendants have made her diaries available on line. Narrator was great. I'll definitely read more by this author.

Historia
Jim and his literal shoulder demon have survived, so far, by the skin of their teeth. After finding a long-abandoned starter village, Jim has begun the process of rebuilding his town. Unfortunately for our favorite adventurer, the threats he now faces are far more complicated than mere monsters. The poor Noob has to deal with angry townsfolk, trade negotiations, and a talking badger. With goblins and bandits also sniffing around, will Noobtown - I mean Windfall - survive?

The narrator does a particularly good job of getting the humor across and making each character unique. His voices and accents really bring the story to life.

Revisado: 12-14-23
I loved this book so much when I first listen to it several years ago that I started over and listened all over again. Going through some of my old titles recently I came across it and decided to listen again. Just as good as it was the first two times.

Historia
Across two parallel narratives, Murakami draws listeners into a mind-bending universe in which Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is a novel that is at once hilariously funny and a deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind.

Liberating info for those w/ bi-polar
Revisado: 08-31-19
I haven't even finished listening and am telling my friends and family that this is critical reading for anyone affected by mental illness, both the afflicted person and their loved ones. I plan to buy the hard copy so I can mark it up and put sticky notes on the pages for easy reference. There is such liberation just by having a clearer understanding of your disease - if there is such a possibility where bi-polar is concerned. Great strides are being made in the field of mental disorders and there is much reason to hope, however, my fear is that those of us who have the privilege of income, food, shelter and medical care will be the primary beneficiaries of more accurate diagnosis and treatment, while the underserved population, living on the streets, will not get the help they need - especially at the prices drug companies charge for medicine that could help people. I'm not labeling homeless people in general as mentally ill, however, MANY of them are; that's why they are homeless - they have a disease that prevents them from functioning normally in society. The more we understand, the more we can advocate for our fellow man. The knowledge in this book is a good place to start. Hollywood has the capability to educate the public when they are passionate about a cause and I'm sure there are many celebrities that suffer from or love someone one affected by mental illness. More understanding, less shame. The next time you hear someone say, "Oh, I dated them! They were so bi-polar," ask them to exchange the word for something like "diabetic". Dr. Mondimore explains succinctly how and why this is a disease, just like diabetes-your brain does not function properly-not your fault. Of course, people with diabetes don't get delusional, hyper-sexual or spiritual, and they don't go on spending sprees or think they are the new Messiah. When in the throes of a manic episode the "symptoms" of the disease often manifest themselves in bizarre behaviors, probably the prompt for the "they were so bi-polar" remark. EVERYONE can benefit from this book!
I had no expectations in regard to narration beyond wanting a good delivery, but Mr. Abrams goes way beyond a good delivery. He gives each segment of dialogue a "voice" which brings the narration to life. I will look for other books narrated by Mr. Abrams. Even though this book is very clinical in content, it is very well written and an interesting read/listen.

Historia
In seven years of blogging only to the community of voice actors, specifically on the subject of voice acting, I've educated myself and others on the challenges of being a freelance voice artist. My first diplomatic answer to my caller is: being a success in voice acting requires more than just a voice. I've had to gingerly explain the real secret to voiceover success so often that it became clear: somebody needed to tell the truth about being a voice-actor. It's hard work! It's a business and should be approached as a business.
