Well written and well performed.

Riveting nicely paced great character development and diverse characters.

Have read it over a dozen times in the six years that I have purchased story. Highly recommend.

Almost a waste of a credit

The Patrick and grant matson threads are extraneous and a waste of listening minutes. So much more could have been done fleshing out the rescue. The Barbara Rachel and or Steve storylines could have easily replaced the wasted minutes used for Patrick and Grant and thus added value to the overall story. Nice try Shelby, while you writing style has promise, you underwhelmed in this third instalment.

Is AJ Neumann a Woman or a Young Man?

The authors attempts at making strong female characters falls short. The women are still emotional and irrational as one would typically find in this genre but then they are also overbearing and opinionated instead strong. The men are spineless and unseasoned. All of this is accentuated by the narrators character voice choices. Killing off characters rather than allowing them to grow as one would expect them to do in dire situations is a questionable plot development choice. Finally the fact that the characters are continually striving to pair off in what is a dangerous long term situation is tragic story telling. People do not look to find some one to marry off to while staving off hunger and fighting renegades. Think of Maslov’s hierarchy of needs.

This is strictly a 3.5 star book. The bones are good but the editor should have done their job in properly steering the author better. It is only two hairs better than Grace Hamilton’s harlequin romance style of prepper fiction. And that is only because this author demonstrates some actual knowledge about the subject matter.

As a woman I admit my bias is coloured. I guess I just mourn the deterioration of this genre into pump and dump formulaic and unoriginal writing. Seriously though, ok read. Not a waste of money but disappointing on many levels.

Formula writing

Solid predictable story. Enjoyable enough. Do not buy stories individually as it is a waste of money...which is authors goal. Authors notes and preface should be removed from omnibus version. Just fast forward through them.

Narrator is a favourite despite his tendency to make his females sound impatient hysterical and irrational. He needs to work on this.

I bought another of this author’s omnibus stories. Hopefully it is better. Hopefully it is not weaker.

This is a good enough story. Just not great. Like a harlequin romance. Not great storytelling, but a nice enough distraction.

I Have "Read" This Series Four Times (So Far)

Well written, Nice character development, Nice survival skills, and situational reactions from the characters. Wrapped up too quickly in the storyline and is quasi questionable BUT still enjoyable. You really get a sense of Alaska and all of its glory.

Chris Abernathy is one of my top 10 narrators. He speaks at a nice rate and emotes just enough.

Highly recommend.

This is not a prepper story

While this genre has been descending into formulaic writing, those two stories were never prepper stories to begin with. Admittedly I have never listened to a Jack Hunt book before. I don’t know whether Jack is a thirty something woman or a twenty something male but the writing AND the narration was far to emo to be endured. I had to force myself to finish the stories. I am not saying that jack can’t write, in fact his stories have some bare bone ideas that have great merit. I am saying that no writer is suited for every genre and that Jack is not suited for prepper fiction. Perhaps dramatic popular fiction. If you must write by formula, please emulate Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, or (dare I say it) Clive Cussler. Not Danielle Steele. They know how string tension and evolve their characters while using emotion/sex/humour as a spice rather than as a main ingredient.

Narrator makes females sound hysterical

Not unusually, the male narrator has difficulty portraying a range of emotions that the female characters express. This assumes of course that the author did not write it as thus.

Good story overall. Will be purchasing third instalment. Am wondering at authors knowledge of subject matter. Does not detract from overall good story. I recommend.

Slightly disappointing

Love Kevin pierce even though is Accents are appalling.

Story was ok. Unimaginative. Formula. No surprises no grit.
Sort of like the harlequin romance version of prepper shtf stories.
