Historia
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 06-25-24
To be fair, I will need to buy a print edition and reread this book. I like the overall concept of the 2nd Mountain. However, the application that comes after the discussion on the 2nd Mountain is where I will need more time. Very thought provoking.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

I am glad to have this book. It is a thought provoking review of the last 50 years of the church and politics and ask the questions: Was it worth it? What have we really won?

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Wow…just wow
Revisado: 04-09-24
First, I appreciate the candor of the author’s story. Second, his discussion of luxury beliefs is insightful and likely the topic for which this book will be remembered. But, third, I hope his final point is truly remembered: the need to love children that they know that love is secure.

Historia
It turns out giving up your "right" to be offended can be one of the most freeing, healthy, simplifying, relaxing, refreshing, stress-relieving, encouraging things you can do. It's a radical, provocative idea: We're not entitled to get offended or stay angry. The idea of our own "righteous anger" is a myth. It is the number one problem in our societies today and, as Dallas Willard says, Christians have not been taught out of it. But what if Christians were the most unoffendable people on the planet?

Think highly of this book, enough to listen with all the family. Having Brant narrate the book added to the overall impact. Thought provoking…convicting, actually.

A Return to Form
Revisado: 04-17-23
After being a little disappointed with the last OrphanX novel, I found this a really good return to form. Scott Brick is amazing, as always. And, OrphanX and his clan are excellent. I even appreciate the nice twist with the main “bad guy.”

Still Love it
Revisado: 03-11-23
I have read and now listened to this book. And, I still love it. First, Scott Brick could read anything and it would be great. Second, I simply enjoy Cronin’s writing, particularly his ability to describe the feelings of others in very poignant situations. Third, I continued to enjoy the development of the overall story. This is a very good series.

Not my favorite volume
Revisado: 12-13-22
This volume was not my favorite of the series, and I am not totally sure why it did not land with me. Perhaps much of the dialogue and hand-wringing seemed repetitive? Not sure, but the overall story was just ok.
