stellar performance, ok plot

I listen to a lot of audiobooks--200+ a year--and I was extremely impressed with the performance of the narrators. This is a full cast, so each time a character speaks, it is in that actor's voice. The voices are appropriate to each character and accents seem authentic.
The storyline itself was ok but not great, imo. There is not much depth to each character, and they almost have insta-love, which seems a bit immature and unrealistic.

Beautiful story

I'm a big fan of KJ Charles, so I felt pretty sure I'd like this book. I had no idea that I would love it this much. The characters are so well written and loveable, and the complexities in their lives feel authentic. The narrator has an unusual cadence that took me a few minutes to get used to, then I found that I LOVED it. He reads slowly, taking small pauses frequently, but for me it almost felt like the actual way the characters would think--especially MC1. It felt like things were slowly dawning on him, to match the cadence of the narrator. Overall a big 5 starts from me, but I can see how the narrator might be off-putting to some listeners.

ridiculous plot, excellent narrator

I absolutely loved this narrator, but the story has plot holes so big you could drive a bus through them! I really wanted to like the story, and parts of it were somewhat engaging, but I kept thinking "wait a minute--what about...." or "that doesn't make sense--what about...." I don't want to give specific examples because they would be spoilers, but there are many, many examples of things that literally make no sense that were used to drive the "mystery."
I will definitely buy more books with this narrator, but I won't buy more from this author.

great story, amazing narration

Very moving and poignant story. I haven't seen the movie, but I plan to now. I hope it does this book justice. the narrator did a fantastic job! I listened to audiobooks all the time, and I can count on one hand the number of narrators that have blown me away with their talent, and this one is definitely one of the best I've ever heard.

unsettling and creepy--in the best way

The performance was great. The MC Anne sounded so sweet, earnest, and maybe a bit unhinged. This was an interesting plot that left it up to the listener to fill in some of the blanks in the mystery, which I liked but I'm sure some people won't. It was just the right level of "is she crazy or is it supernatural" through most of the story.

one of my favorite true crime podcasts! excellent storytelling and I love the interaction between the dad (detective) and daughter (who researches the stories

One scene ruins the story for me

I really like the Bridgertons series, but as most Bridgerton fans know, there are some seriously offensive and triggering things that the heroes sometimes do. Spoilers follow.

Gregory is supposed to be a romantic who wholeheartedly believes in true love. He has been raised in a loving home with many strong, positive female role models. And yet we are supposed to believe that he would KIDNAP AND TIE UP the woman he loves because he doesn't trust her to stay where he wants her to, and he felt there was no other choice. Then her best friend thinks it's funny? amusing? when Gregory tells her what he did. Ummmm....I'm sorry. WHAT??!? This one scene absolutely ruins the story and the hero for me. Full stop.
Julia Quinn, please, please, I beg you, stop writing about abuse and passing it off as romance. It's not. Of course this is fiction, but abusive interactions between the hero and heroine are harmful and unacceptable.

Almost heaven.......almost.

As a West Virginian, this story hit close to home for me. I'd heard of the case in the news, but MrBallen's storytelling really brings this tragic story to life. Thank you again, John!
