Excellent narration, boring story
Revisado: 08-30-23
I can’t believe I read another of these books. They are so boring and tedious. At the same time, Adjoa Andoh is extremely talented and worth listening to.

Historia
Tracy Flick wants to be President of Winwood High. She’s one of those ambitious girls who finds time to do it all: edit the yearbook, star in the musical, sleep with her English teacher. But another teacher, staunch idealist Jim McAllister, a.k.a. “Mr. M.,” thinks the students deserve better. So he persuades Paul Warren—a well-liked, good-hearted jock—to throw in his hat. But that puts Paul’s sister Tammy in a snit. So she runs too, on an apathy platform, before starting a real campaign...to get herself kicked out of school.

Historia
Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he’s called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he’s surprised by the routineness of it all. But when he arrives on scene, Cal soon learns that the victim—Roddy Tebbit, an otherwise milquetoast techie—is well over seven feet tall. And although he doesn’t look a day over thirty, he is ninety-one years old. Tebbit is a Titan—one of this dystopian, near-future society’s genetically altered elites. And this case is definitely Cal’s thing.

Not a bad story, but not what I was expecting
Revisado: 05-30-23
This is a bit different than I’m used to from the author. Good narration, an intriguing story, but very different from his other novels. This might have been a good one for Aidan Truhen maybe?

Historia
Lester Ferris needs a rest. He's spent his life being shot at, and Afghanistan was the last stop on his road to exhaustion. Mancreu is the ideal place for Lester to relax. A former British colony, soon to be destroyed because of its very special version of toxic pollution. But Lester Ferris makes a friend: a street kid with a comicbook fixation who will need a home - who might, Lester hopes, become an adopted son. But in a place like Mancreu, just what sort of hero will the boy need?

Another excellent story from Nick Harkaway. I want to know how he gets such good narrators for each of his books!

Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

A real treat. This was less of an autobiography than a series of extremely entertaining stories told from various points throughout the author’s life. Absolutely perfect. I don’t need some half-assed attempt to shoehorn an overarching narrative on top of the autobiography of an actor, I just want to be entertained for a little while! Much appreciated!

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 06-30-19
** spoiler alert **
I couldn’t decide on two or three stars for this one. It was pretty disappointing. I’ve been a fan of this author since Snow Crash, and have followed his subsequent novels since the late 90’s. With the depth, style, and sophistication of those earlier novels in mind, I had high hopes for this one, which promised to be something akin to Stephenson’s take on the Singularity. I was hoping for something more like Snow Crash or Cryptonomicon or even Reamde. This managed to be even less entertaining than SevenEves.
The characters were completely forgettable and unremarkable, as few were given enough time to develop. Most of the subplots (Ameristan?) and a great deal of the characters introduced earlier in this book are completely forgotten by the end, which makes you wonder why they were included in the first place.
The detailed exploration of scientific and technological ideas that I’d enjoyed in his previous works was completely abandoned in this book, as for instance, he spends about as much time expounding upon one character’s adventures on a logging crew as he does exploring the technical details and societal consequences of uploading consciousness.
About 2/3 of the way through, after the entirety of the story moves to bitworld, I just about gave up on the book. This part was really tedious. Endless throwaway characters and subplots that you can easily ignore. As another reviewer has commented, he has taken his biblical allegories so far here, he made this section as boring as actually reading the Bible. Like many others reviewers here, I wish the author had even a halfway decent editor, someone who could have made him cut this section down to about a tenth of its length. Sadly, it went on for so long, I forgot the parts of this book that I actually liked. There, I decided on two stars.
