Historia
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

Deserves an Oscar for her work on this audio book. A perfect showcase of the difference between a reader and a wildly talented voice actor. I'll probably listen to this again at some point, just for the performance!
The book itself is also super satisfying, so shout out to Joe Hill!

Ending!!
Revisado: 05-06-20
Two major points of consideration for 'Relative Terror'...
Con: There is a female character in this book that acts outrageously unbelievably in a "love" capacity and it's hard to take seriously.
Pro: The ending is rather fantastic and was not one that I guessed, which is both rare and refreshing!
Overall, I'd say that the ending makes up for how silly some of the behavior is.

Frustrating and Fantastic
Revisado: 05-06-20
Stories where something unspeakable is happening to a woman and she can't tell anyone because no one will believe her are a special kind of terrifying and frustrating and 'Scattershot' is a perfect example. Jon Athan weaves a gruesome and spooky tale that was satisfying from top to bottom. Rebekah Nemethy delivers an excellent and believable performance that kept me coming back for more. If you're into murder/mystery/horror then you won't want to miss this one!

Masterfully Done
Revisado: 05-06-20
This 20 hour long book was superb from top to bottom and I almost didn't try it because of reviews like this: "It's pretty much 15 hours of super detailed rape." While I do agree that the description could benefit from a trigger warning for rape, the assessment of this being "15 hours of super detailed rape" is just wildly inaccurate. There are a handful of graphically violent scenes throughout this very long book and, as far as I'm concerned, they were all well earned within the framework of the story and executed with classic horror/crime writer prowess. Without them, the book wouldn't have been half as effective; this is not one with graphic violence for graphic violence's sake.
In a word: if you're into murder mystery books that are intricately and expertly written and narrated by a powerhouse performer like Kathleen Early, then 'Pretty Girls' is definitely for you. 10/10

Old School Haunted House Story
Revisado: 04-03-20
As the title suggests, this story is about a house.... in the woods. A spooky one!
A classic set up, two city-dwellers hope to escape the chaos of their current lives by fleeing to the country where they can just barely afford a whole house. Once relocated, they find that life isn't what they expected it would be as spooky things happen in increasing frequency inside their new home. You get the idea. It wasn't the best story like this I've ever listened to, but I'd definitely say it's worth the time.

Curious
Revisado: 04-03-20
This was an odd one, in good and bad ways. It has a super strong opening about the crawl space and I was really hoping that that plot line would be a major thread throughout the story. This book took a whole different turn, however, and while most of it was quite good, I couldn't help but be a little disappointed by the lack of 'crawlspace plot line.' This is definitely on me and not on Dan Padavona, who wrote a pretty good tale in 'Storberry.' Paul-Alexandre Petit does an excellent job of narration here!

So Much Fun
Revisado: 04-03-20
I enjoyed this one from top to bottom and I have to say (no spoilers!) it had an ending that I didn't see coming, which was nice and refreshing. Paul-Alexandre Petit does a superb job of narrating 'Skellyman,' especially his portrayal of four year old Daisy. It would be all too easy to fall into a trap of having that be super annoying, but Petit definitely rises to the challenge. A juicy mystery, a sordid past, the (possible) imagination of a child, skeletons and even a splash of romance; this story has a little something for everyone!

Christian Horror - NO.
Revisado: 01-16-20
I rarely buy books on Audible, but when I read the synopsis of this one I had to give it a shot. The first 1/4th of the story was pretty good, spooky and entertaining. The middle 1/2 of the book could be cut completely and the latter 1/4th is just disappointing.
I think it's incredibly lazy to take religious dogma and dress it up as a morality based horror. Don't get me wrong, there are many aspects of religion (particularly, Christianity) that are absolutely horrifying. But using it as a structure for a book like this is either an attempt to prosthelytize or just a disturbing lack of imagination. You really can't come up with a story line that isn't about god, the devil, Eve, etc? to get at "good and evil?"
All of that said, I do agree that god is an imaginary friend for adults. If you don't want to spend 24 hours leading towards a "god is love" ending, then definitely skip this one. What a waste of effort.
Christine Lakin ALMOST makes this silly book worth listening to. Her narration here is absolutely superb. Her acting was what carried me through this one, she has some genuine chops. I will be seeking out more books narrated by Lakin.

This collection of 10 classic tales is very representative of Wharton's approach to story-telling - in the narrative, the venue becomes a character almost as much as do the people. Situations are presented in an elegantly understated way, and the overall effect is disturbing rather than blatantly horrific.

Spooky Collection
Revisado: 01-04-20
I wouldn't say that these stories are particularly scary (or disturbing, as the description says) but they were fun to listen to nonetheless. All 10 stories were expertly narrated. As is usually true with collections, some of the stories worked better for me than others but none stand out as being the weakest of the bunch. If you're into short form horror that is spooky more than scary, this collection is for you!

From the writer of Ghost Hunter, Little Women with Big Guns, and Krakenstein vs. Koalatron comes an unforgettable excursion into the depths of the unknown. Loaded end to end with chills, this terrifying narrative is loosely based on accounts of encounters with the legendary Pukwudgie, a cryptozoological "myth" originating in Massachusetts' mysterious Bridgewater Triangle.

Sigh
Revisado: 01-04-20
Alternative Headline: Drunk White Man is Awful. It was difficult to listen to parts of this, to the parts where our protagonist abused Imp for no apparent reason. Or, I guess, he said it was "to keep him unconscious, you know." I really despised him from the start. It's not that Candela did a poor job writing this, I just hated his main character so much it made me not want to finish the book. I powered on and I'm still not sure it was worth it in the end.
However, Gary Bennett is a fabulous narrator and he doesn't disappoint here. If you're someone who is interested in stories that follow terrible, abusive people, then this one may be for you!!
