Not my favorite Wally Lamb book
Revisado: 04-02-25
Not my favorite Wally Lamb book. There were some really beautiful moments, but overall, I felt the story lacked focus. It was overly abundant with references to so many social issues and types of trauma. I only stayed with it because there were a couple characters that I was invested in.
The voice of Annie and that of Vivica were overly dramatic. Maybe if I had read the book, I might have liked it better?

My Favorite Book, Period
Revisado: 03-10-25
I’ve read this book several times over the years and have recommended it to many people. I haven’t met someone who didn’t like it. Listening to it was a whole new experience! When you listen to a book, you cannot skim over words. It made me appreciate Kingsolver’s beautiful writing style. It was special having the author reading her own book.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Be True to Yourself
Revisado: 01-21-25
An entertaining story with some life lessons. I wasn’t fond of the narrator’s voice, but it wasn’t so distracting as to ruin the overall story.

I loved the story of family, traditions, memories and secrets. I didn’t enjoy the female narrator. She lacked expression, fairly one note. I will read more by this author.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie and Samad and their families become agents of England’s irrevocable transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose personality doesn’t quite match her name (Jamaican for “no problem”). Samad’s late-in-life arranged marriage produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbal’s every effort to direct them.

Lyrical Writing Style

Thoroughly enjoyed the narration. The narrator added to the lyrical way the author writes. The story had many character studies. In the end, there wasn’t any character that I identified with or even cared about their outcome.
