Way too predictable
Revisado: 11-24-23
I wanted to like this book and continued reading even though I guessed the ending early on. I love a good mystery but this was not my cup of tea. The way the story is told does not make up for the predictability.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

I have read this book many times but I have never enjoyed it as much as this time. Thandie Newton did such a wonderful job as a narrator that I could not stop listening. Superb!

Story ok but hate the format
Revisado: 10-02-17
The story is decent and I would like to know how it ends but I just can’t stand the thought of listening to six more hours of screaming. I like scary books but apparently this format is not for me :-(

Heartbreaking but beautiful
Revisado: 03-04-17
I waited a while to purchase this book because of the reviews - I wasn't sure if I wanted to read a book knowing it was about a really sad story. I am so grateful I ended up reading it anyway. Great writing, truly beautiful, with a story that was sad and heartbreaking, but also full of love and friendship. Even though I cringed at some of the things that happened to the main character it's the beauty of the love and friendship that he finds that will stay with me forever - that plus the beautiful writing which made me dread the end of the book.

Not for me!
Revisado: 04-30-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I like historical fiction, but I'm not into murder mysteries, and this book seems to be a mix of both. If you love mysteries in a historical setting and don't mind bizarre twists in a story you could give it a try. I might have enjoyed it more if it had been cleverly written with more believable story twists. I really wanted to like this book, and I listened to it all the way to the end, but found it boring and farfetched.
Has Speaks the Nightbird turned you off from other books in this genre?
For now yes. I may give it another try in the future but I will definitely not get any of the other books in this series.
What aspect of Edoardo Ballerini’s performance would you have changed?
There's nothing wrong with his performance but I didn't enjoy the story so it's hard to get enthusiastic about his performance of the story.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Speaks the Nightbird?
The one in the stable (I will not go into details but I could have done without this scene!!!).
Any additional comments?
I'm so glad I had already purchased 'Swan Song' from the author before I started reading this book, because 'Speaks the Nightbird' might have put me off reading books from this author forever. I'm currently reading 'Swan Song' and I'm enjoying it immensely. I would never have guessed both books are from the same author!

Loved every word!
Revisado: 11-13-09
As a long time fan of the Wheel of Time series, I eagerly awaited this book. When I finally got it I decided not to focus too much on the fact that there were now two authors working on it and I must say I did not notice differences in style or anything like that. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which was filled with action and surprises. In fact I've already decided to listen to it again in a few weeks just so I can enjoy it once more!
