Narrator is SO much better!
Revisado: 04-07-25
The author can finally get the well-deserved kudos for her well-crafted story! I couldn’t finish 1st book b/c of horrible narration, skipped the next 4 and decided to try this 6th in series w/different narration; excellent work by author & narrator! Am going to try to go back to get through the balance of the 1st and the others to answer some questions…but it’s truly an excellent series for those who enjoy 19th & 20th century historical whodunnits; highly recommend this series!

An Enjoyable Treat
Revisado: 12-11-24
I’m a “whodunnit” person who stumbled on these two books. The narrator was so good from the beginning and the storyline so compelling almost immediately that I couldn’t stop listening. You won’t be disappointed by this two-book gem.

But Harriet discovers that the best intentions can lead to murder when she is strangled inside her mansion with a house full of holiday guests. As much as Inspector Witherspoon enjoys his job delivering justice, the last thing he wanted was a complicated murder case just a week before Christmas. He soon discovers that Harriet's own husband and grown stepchildren are not overcome with grief and neither are most of her friends.

Good Comfortable Cozy
Revisado: 09-09-24
I’m almost done with the entire series & enjoy these easy cozies while doing chores/hobbies. Nothing stressful, just a tad bit more suspense as the culprit is revealed. As is common with most British narrators, U.S. characters are portrayed with a pronounced southern U.S. drawl—characters who are supposed to be from California or the upper east coast. I’ve discovered only one British narrator who actually does “American” well. Despite that small irritation, the stories themselves deliver the easygoing cozy we expect when choosing this genre, and are enjoyable.

As usual, I wish all Audible narrators were as good! And I waiting six months for Ms. Archer’s next installment of Cleopatra Fox’s adventures is depressing—definitely looking forward to another awesome storyline.

Good Enough Period Mystery, Narrator Not Quite Right
Revisado: 06-16-24
I started this once a couple months ago but the narrator was too breathy and overly dramatic so I went on to another series. Turned to it again, changed the speed to 1.2 and gritted my teeth through the first several chapters but stuck with it and it got interesting enough to stick with it…the jury is still out about moving forward with the next one in the series.

Wow…Is All I Can Say
Revisado: 06-13-24
This series has intrigued me enough to keep with it because there are enough plot twists entwined with profound insights to keep me listening. But I have to say, this one was truly captivating with its excellent portrayal of humanness at its finest and its worst, excellently revealed. Bravo, Ms. Raybourn.

A Lifestyle Can get To be Troublesome
Revisado: 03-09-24
I did enjoy this book enough to want to know what happens—the events were straight forward and interesting enough with only the perhaps one (maybe 2 interesting twists); not a page turner but just enough who-dunnit interest. I may look for a second read with this character if one exists but not quite with the same enthusiasm I’ve had with others of its ilk. The main and supporting characters could have been developed further, as well as the murdered person’s history to lend more authenticity to the whys and hows of that particular person’s business dealings

Revisado: 02-09-24
I am sure this prelude is as much non-fiction as it is a work of fiction. The story is fabulously written and amazingly compelling for its brevity. This series is now the only absolute must in my Audible wishlist. Excellent story, excellent narration.

GOOD STORYLINE—VERY WRONG NARRATOR
Revisado: 02-09-24
I love period whodunnits set in England but I cringed through listening to this because the narrator is so not up to par for this great read. Her cadence is all wrong—it’s as if she’s a bit angry but not sure, with a question mark at the end of every sentence. The statements made by each character are almost on point, but the general narrative story setting portions seem as if she’s reading stand-alone sentences unrelated to each other. Love this author but I can’t move forward in series with this narrator.

Another excellent chapter in solving crime and in courting protocols of early 1800s London society.
Revisado: 01-11-24
This is the 2nd in this series and is another excellent story. Life in a social structure like that of London in the early 1800s juxtaposed against crime solving challenges and abominable laws made for a very interesting and educational read. Can’t wait to begin the 3rd edition.
