Nonsense masquerading science.
Revisado: 05-20-24
Author threw together unrelated scientific terms and pseudoscience for no specific purpose. Seems like he asked AI to write this using a bunch of scientific words with imaginary meanings.

Historia
From pole to pole and across decades of lived experience, National Book Award-winning author Barry Lopez delivers his most far-ranging, yet personal, work to date. Horizon moves indelibly, immersively, through the author’s travels to six regions of the world: from Western Oregon to the High Arctic; from the Galápagos to the Kenyan desert; from Botany Bay in Australia to finally, unforgettably, the ice shelves of Antarctica.

Commentary on human impact on the world without bias.

Scholarly recounting of travels to extremely remote places expressed how humans and animals dealt with an unfriendly climate. His observations and opinions painted a vivid picture.

Historia
For the crime of stealing bread, 14-year-old May receives a life sentence: She must become a Sin Eater - a shunned woman, brutally marked, whose fate is to hear the final confessions of the dying, eat ritual foods symbolizing their sins as a funeral rite, and thereby shoulder their transgressions to grant their souls access to heaven. Orphaned and friendless, apprenticed to an older Sin Eater who cannot speak to her, May must make her way in a dangerous and cruel world she barely understands.

Fact or fiction? Hard to tell
Revisado: 11-16-23
I really enjoyed the sense of reality. Characters and settings were believable and I didn’t harbor second thoughts about character’s responses to their situations. I particularly liked the ending although I did initially think it was abrupt and left something unresolved. It seemed like a teaser for a sequel. However, on second thought it felt right.
For a novel set in what seemed like the dark ages, characters’ mind sets felt very much like those in today’s political spectrum. Scary.
The writing smacked of fine literature wrapped around an historical setting with a page turner pace. I was glad I read it and won’t soon forget that I did.

Current observations with an eye to the future.
Revisado: 09-13-23
I like books that have some footing in the past, but primarily look at what’s happening currently and provide hints about the near future. Not many do that as well as John Green did with this book.
As I listened to his reading of the book, I heard the emotion behind the writing. That element added substantially to the writing.
“The Ginkgo” was my favorite chapter and Dr. Pepper was a close second.
All in all a very satisfying work of nonfiction .

Social media good or bad
Revisado: 05-28-23
Smith’s explanation of internet potential for doing good and bad seems very even handed. Because he was deeply involved in the development of the internet as we now experience it, his story rings true to me.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Unflinching History
Revisado: 01-18-23
Breadth of knowledge - extensive. History that reads like a novel. I came across many accounts of history that were new to me although the general flow of events was as I understood them. I like that the book included questions about humanity’s future.
