Historia
Historic statements of faith—such as the Heidelberg Catechism, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Westminster Confession of Faith—have helped the Christian church articulate and adhere to God’s truth for centuries. However, many modern evangelicals reject these historic documents and the practices of catechesis, proclaiming their commitment to “no creed but the Bible.” And yet, in today’s rapidly changing culture, ancient liturgical tradition is not only biblical—it’s essential.

Foundational and Practical
Revisado: 03-19-24
Excellent historical overview of creeds and confessions and how they practically applied to us today. Should be a standard read for any Christian who wants to understand confessionalism and self reflection if their church really upholds biblical teachings.

Historia
In Creekstone, Texas, a small, quiet suburb of Houston, football was king and David Temple was a prince. A former high school and college gridiron-star-turned-coach, he had a fairy-tale marriage to bright, vivacious Belinda Lucas, a teacher at the local high school who was so warm and popular her colleagues called her "The Sunshine Girl". The fairy tale ended savagely on January 11, 1999, when Belinda's lifeless body was discovered in a closet. Her skull had been shattered by a shotgun blast at close range. She was eight months pregnant.

If you like true crime..
Revisado: 03-07-24
Calling this an avg 3-star performance and story for two reasons:
1) narration emoted a lot which I find annoying and distracting.
2) the stat collection on deaths for pregnant women was shallow and marginal to the story. More powerful would have been family therapists or other relational studies on how abused women act/engage.
Early on, this was a textbook bad news bears marriage. Any time it looks that perfect, know it’s not and stuff is likely WAY bad when the guests all leave. Sad state of human condition, but thankful so many are now aware this mess happens.
And I won’t even start on the husband’s family and red flags there. Yikes. This story made me mad and sad. Happy to put it away now.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Enjoyed the narrator. At times the story could be tedious but it’s a fantastic wealth of information that give a full scope of the political landscape and personal background leading up to and through the civil war. Highly recommend.

Political hacking with blatant bias

I was hoping for an attempted unbiased, fact-based assessment of presidential performance. No such luck. The blind eye to equally bad conservative presidents was blatant and painful to listen to.

Historia
In her late 30's, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down - the idea that Christianity, a religion she had regarded as problematic, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.

Thought provoking, convicting testimony
Revisado: 09-01-23
I’m not sure what I expected, but wanted something different than my usual for a work road trip. This has been in my reading list for a while so I hit play and set the cruise control en route to DC. I’m grateful for God’s providential control over all things in my life — even this choice. What a compelling, convicting, powerful testimony!
Dr. Butterfield doesn’t hold punches in her story but doesn’t dive in to graphic details for shock value either. Along the way, she highlights the opportunities Christians have to remember we’re sinners, whether in outreach to non-believers or with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. While hers is a bit more conservative than my beliefs, I gained very relevant and useful perspectives from this story.
1) accepting, while not approving
2) listening to know people, not waiting for a turn to share the gospel
3) investing the high value time instead of the spare time
4) an incredibly well articulated biblical view of marriage — and spoiler, no pithy one-liner for that one.
Very good book and very powerful, talented woman seeking Christ - an inspiration in how we’re called to use our gifts for God’s glory!

When Murph Cooper rocks up to his new school, he can't help but feel a bit out of his depth. It's because his mum has enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake. And unlike his fellow students Murph has no special abilities whatsoever. But just because you don't have superpowers, it doesn't mean you can't save the day....

Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore had a lot in common: They sang together in the Methodist church choir, their daughters were best friends, and their husbands had good jobs working for technology companies in the North Dallas suburbs known as Silicon Prairie. But beneath the placid surface of their seemingly perfect lives, both women simmered with unspoken frustrations and unanswered desires. On a hot summer day in 1980, the secret passions and jealousies that linked Candy and Betty exploded into murderous rage.

Historia
Luke Timothy Johnson, the best-selling author of The Real Jesus, offers a fresh and historically grounded assessment of the life and letters of Christianity's "apostle to the Gentiles" in this 12-lecture series. "One of the most fascinating, important, and controversial figures in the religious history of the West, Paul the Apostle continues to find champions and detractors, sometimes in surprising places," says Professor Johnson. Coming to grips with Christianity means coming to grips with Paul.

A study in bias?
Revisado: 11-22-22
This “lecture series” was pathetic and I’m sad for every person who is subjected to it after me. The only positive things I can say is the lecturer is energized and animated. But the content here is generated from a very simple-minded assessment of the record of Paul’s life. I must assume this stems from the lecturer’s own bias. That’s sad — at least he’s not claiming to be a fact-based scientist.
The real damage is fine when the story teller ignores opportunities to acknowledge his limits of knowledge and evidence and instead forces his premises on the audience.
Getting my credit back won’t return the brain cells that died during this.

Leaders in the church are called to be shepherds, not a board of directors. This requires involvement in a personal shepherding ministry among the people. The Shepherd Leader unpacks the four primary ministries of shepherds - knowing, feeding, leading, and protecting - on macro (churchwide) and micro (personal) levels, providing seven elements to be incorporated into an effective shepherding plan.
