Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Fabulous

The story itself is wonderful, but the performance is spot-on perfect. Thoroughly enjoyable; in fact, I was a little sad to be done with the book!

I wish I could get back the time I lost
Revisado: 09-14-24
This is the third book we've read by this author for my book club. I didn't care for the first one, didn't like the second one, but this one was the worst. If our book club chooses another book by this author, I will not read it. I honestly don't understand why some people love this author. If you love her, you'll listen to this book despite my review. If you don't like her, you aren't even reading my review. But, if you're going to try out this author, don't start with this book. It's boring, predictable, and poorly written. To add to my misery, I did not care for the performers either. Maybe they are better when they are reading/performing a better book.

This story had me guessing ....and guessing again! Suspenseful! I really couldn't stop listening. Might be the best one in The Housemaid series; but they are all so good.

Historia
A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found. Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily.

It's just not a good story
Revisado: 06-09-24
First, the positive. The performance was excellent, except for when the male performer was reading the female characters in a really weird voice. Now, for the negatives. The story is just no good. The ending is ludicrous. What happened to Dean Koontz over the decades? He has gone downhill. Too bad. I can't really write more without major spoilers, for those brave enough to try out this book.

Historia
Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

Funny, Romantic, and an adventure to boot!
Revisado: 04-19-24
It's really rare for me to give books FIVE stars. This one has a bit of everything for everyone! There's a bit of fantasy, a bit of romance, a bit of mystery, a bit of thrilling adventure. I just wish they hadn't traded back and forth between a male and female narrator (each chapter). It took awhile to get used to the people in the book having different "voices" depending on who was reading. But that's minor. The book is delightful - a word I rarely use, but it's so appropriate!

Historia
In this New York Times best seller, a naturalist probes the forest to comprehend the secret lives of owls. Leigh Calvez takes listeners on an adventure into the world of owls: owl-watching, avian science, and the deep forest - often in the dead of night. These birds are a bit mysterious, and that's part of what makes them so fascinating.

So Disappointed
Revisado: 04-11-24
this book was syrupy sweet. I didn't expect this to be a book anthropomorphizing owls. Most of the book was about bird banding, which I already know about. A lot of the book was also about the author's search to see different owls. Neither of those topics has any real thing to do with the hidden lives of owls. A very misleading title.

Just okay
Revisado: 04-07-24
While I enjoyed the references to Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, it really was just a so-so book. Boring at times, a little too detailed at times. The narration was also just okay. Not horrible, not great.

What is consciousness? Why are we here? Where did it all come from - the laws of nature, the stars, the universe? Humans have been asking these questions forever, but science hasn't succeeded in providing many answers - until now. In The Grand Biocentric Design, Robert Lanza, one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People", is joined by theoretical physicist Matej Pavšic and astronomer Bob Berman to shed light on the big picture that has long eluded philosophers and scientists alike.

Not credible
Revisado: 12-02-23
Oh, come on now! I won't spoil it for those who do decide to listen to it (or read it), but the whole story was pretty typical, no surprises. Also, too much sex instead of storyline. Then the "twist" ending, which was laughable. I won't be reading anything else by this author.
