Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

Not like her other books
Revisado: 03-26-23
I was excited to read another Celeste Ng book as I felt her previous books were full of lively characters and thought provoking ideas- this one was disappointing. While the concept was fine, the overly descriptive details made it painfully slow and we never really got the reason the entire PACT was started. The constant whisper of the narrator didn’t help. I would have stopped listening but it was book club choice so I like to finish. Several other members had read and said they liked it but felt like there was too little dialogue, too much description and painfully slow story development. Could have been said in half as many words. I had to speed up just to get through the thing.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Cute story and somewhat predictable
Revisado: 01-26-23
Read this for a bookclub. Thought it would have more meaningful content on the octopus but really was focused on another story of a young man in search of his father. The author’s writing style was engaging as was narrator- I actually enjoyed that more than the story itself. A fun, light read and would like to read something with a bit more depth from this author as her writing and description has huge potential.

A few interesting stories
Revisado: 01-18-23
Read this book for a bookclub. Not a lot to say about it, it was an ok read. Nothing great but nothing bad either. Some stories were more interesting than others but overall not a book I’d recommend given all the other books out there. I had a bit of trouble with the accent at times on people’s names and keeping them straight as toward the end they do have some connection.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Good topic, but poor writing and execution
Revisado: 11-07-18
Listening to this for our monthly bookclub — even though it’s YA we thought it was relevant topic. The book seemed to make very broad-brush statements and play upon stereotypes, and I kept waiting for something to happen. To get the details, the grief, the injustice— but instead it was teenage banter back and forth. Maybe YA can relate, but I would have been better off reading newspaper articles of actual cases to learn about the issues and families.
After reading others comments I was surprised that people liked the narrator. I found the imitation of male voices annoying and couldn’t wait for it to be over.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. Fun and Quirky Read
Revisado: 06-23-18
This book won't win any Pulitzer prize awards, but an interesting book about a woman who comes out of her shell. A great book for introverts and the extroverts who strive to understand them. The narration made it extra engaging for me, better than if I had read the actual book. Shows the kindness of strangers and how sometimes you have to get out of your own way to enjoy life. A fun read and would definitely recommend. Skip the recent "girl" mystery books that are all the rage, and read this instead.

Last summer, The New Yorker published chef Anthony Bourdain's shocking, "Don't Eat Before Reading This." Now, the author uses the same "take-no-prisoners" attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable audiobook, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike.

Insightful Look into Kitchen Craft and Bourdain
Revisado: 06-23-18
I am not a foody and therefore would not normally choose a book like this. I do though enjoy Bourdain's show "Parts Unknown". After his recent suicide, wanted to hear more from him in his early years. Enjoyed his narration (he's a fast talker and one of the few books I didn't need to speed up). Got some glimpse of him and perhaps his struggle with happiness--didn't realize the restaurant industry is filled with the type of people he described as being so typical. Sometimes a bit too much on individual people he worked with and their talents, but enjoyed the overall theme and hearing his voice--knowing that he'll not be around any more. And enjoyed the insider's look into what to order and when. The food world lost a great one.

Great Story of Intertwined Families
Revisado: 06-23-18
One of the best books I read this year. Celeste Ng knows how to write believable characters with an engaging story. We read this as part of our monthly book club and it generated a great discussion on adoption, loyalty, and what a parent really is. While not being the central theme of the book, Ng also weaves in class and race discussions regarding those who have much while others do not. This book is not a mystery or suspense, but it was a book I couldn't put down. Couldn't wait for my morning and evening commute so I could listen. Made me want to read another book by her and it was excellent as well (Everything I Never Told You).

Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Ordinary low-grade thriller
Revisado: 06-23-18
This book is a mix of Gone Girl genre and Rear Window-- too bad it is not halfway as good as either. Neurotic woman who keeps doing really silly things spots something amiss. It's a quick read, maybe some will enjoy if they like formulaic books, but if you're looking for a real mystery skip this one.
