Historia
Sloane Parker is dreading her birthday. She doesn’t need a reminder she’s getting older, or that she’s feeling indifferent about her own life. Her husband surprises her with a birthday-weekend getaway—not with him, but with Sloane’s longtime best friend, troublemaker extraordinaire Naomi. Sloane anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and cozy robes and strategic avoidance of issues she’d rather not confront, like her husband’s repeated infidelity.

Narration is not the right match
Revisado: 09-10-24
I think I would have waited for a library copy if I had heard a sample before preordering. There’s something about Kristen Sieh’s narration of “Such Sharp Teeth” that made me feel that she should always narrate Rachel Harrison books. Sieh adds a mesmerizing cool girl vibe that keeps me spellbound. This will not be one of my listens that stays in rotation when I want to be charmed and compelled.

The one where it was sitcom fanfiction
Revisado: 03-21-24
I honestly don’t know why there were such high reviews. It’s very much like Gilmore Girls fanfiction without the snappy dialogue. The performance was more than competent but Kristen Sieh could have added a bit of a cool factor to what is incredibly corny.

I love this book and the narrator so much!
Revisado: 02-04-24
I wish I loved all of Rachel Harrison’s books as much as I love this one. I’ve bought it for others rather than just recommending it because the narrator is excellent. You can read this solely as a supernatural novel and enjoy it immensely, but you’d be missing the point. That point makes the novel a much richer experience.

When Angela was young, before she came to realize she had a rare ability, she was a rather ordinary girl. At least, that was what everyone said. But Angela is anything but ordinary. The daughter of a meth addict, she is convinced she was born a freak. Haunted by an abusive childhood, she was forced to become a woman far too soon. And in the process, she became more.

This author is obsessed with rape
Revisado: 11-29-23
I disliked the fact that the author seemed to think that rape is just highly annoying to women. It’s so pervasive in the book but I feel I was more traumatized than the protagonist. Also the story is redundant (in other ways) and very unbelievable. I’ve tried to finish. Can’t do it. Even though it’s free.

Revisado: 06-04-23
As others have noted the author of the Thursday Murder Club should be annoyed about this coattail rider. Would I have bought this fan fiction if it hadn’t tried to copy Osman? No, so I guess mission accomplished for a mediocre mystery writer.

The perfume-scented letter that turns Tommie McCloud’s world upside down arrives from a stranger only days after her father’s death. The woman who wrote it claims that Tommie is her daughter—and that she was kidnapped as a baby thirty-one years ago. Tommie wants to believe it’s all a hoax, but suddenly a girl who grew up on a Texas ranch finds herself inextricably linked to a horrific past: the slaughter of a family in Chicago, the murder of an Oklahoma beauty queen, and the kidnapping of a little girl named Adriana.

I loved "Paper Ghosts" but save yourself
Revisado: 05-03-23
I am a fan of Heaberlin's work and I rarely review anything unless it is intolerable. I like her work so much I paid cash for this which means, although I am not finished, I can't return it. I don't know much about the story and I am 6.5 hours in so I have no idea if the book is good. Perhaps you will not think these accents are a complete joke if you are not American and you think most Texans sound like Goofy and Bride of Goofy. HOWEVER, there are characters who come from other lands, so you will also be offended by the New Yorkers accents and the Chicago accents. But I have relatives in all of those places and this is just terrible. Also the narrator forgets to change accents with a character change or when the protagonist is describing action. I am Southern, with relatives in New York and Chicago and I swear to God if they sounded like this, I wouldn't let them visit me. And one of them is my daughter!

Historia
In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter… As the house’s restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect.

Love Xe Sands
Revisado: 03-29-23
The narrator Xe Sands has lifted the work but it’s a pretty silly story. Really? This family owned a 6 bedroom house they summered in for decades but they were never curious enough to open the door to an wing? I could listen to Xe read the periodic table which was why I spent $1.99 for this. Sigh.

Gratuitous Brutality, Predictible Writing & Plot
Revisado: 09-26-22
I love the narrator and was really hoping for a gripping thriller but this is gruesome without being suspenseful. The torture is too much. I have been reading 5 books a week since I was a kid able to grab novels from my Dad's library. There's no book I won't give a fair shot and nothing that's so shocking that I won't entertain. But being able to describe the most horrible torture you can dream up doesn't make you a groundbreaking talent, it reaches a point where you seem to be competing for brutality prizes without putting in the character work. I absolutely knew who the killer would be. I don't always expect that to be a surprise. But have you ever heard the beginning of a sentence and hoped against hope that the end wouldn't be trite and a predictable cliche? A pedestrian plot and hackneyed phrasing cannot be salvaged with grotesque cruelty. (I did buy the next one, hoping that the writing would improve. One third of the way in and I'm rewinding because it lost my attention then fastforwarding once again through truly gratuitous brutality.)

When the second book came out I was worried
Revisado: 09-20-22
For the second book I was actually so relieved that Leslie Manville narrated again. I’ve listened so many times to the first two because of the Osman/Manville duo. How could someone listen to her amazing narration of those and choose not to use her again, or wait for her until she’s free? I’d pay Audible for a new one if this could be redone. Honestly I’m devastated. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve encouraged people to sign up for audible or given them money to do so recommending the Osman-Manville murder club books to start out and given the other books as a present on Audible. Richard Osman I hope you’ll pay attention. I love your books but I need Leslie and so do you.

Donna Tartt shouldn’t narrate her own books
Revisado: 07-28-22
I loved this book hard. It’s still in my top 20 but not as an audible book. Despite the fact that Tartt has a performance background, she did a terrible job on this book. Like John Irving, a beautiful writer who should hire a narrator.
