“harmonious unfolding of nature”
Revisado: 12-06-24
As a current resident of real Gotham, the triad’s commentary was chilling, in light of recent political events. It is sometimes difficult to see the “harmonious unfolding of nature” with all these tall buildings everywhere. Huge fan.

Epistemic stubbornness
Revisado: 11-23-24
Nadler is my favorite Spinoza scholar. He and his co-author have provided us with an excellently reasoned and and readable guide for better thinking. Now how to get my fellow Americans to read and re-read it.

Historia
The world-renowned philosopher and author of the best-selling Justice explores the central question of our time: What has become of the common good? World-renowned philosopher Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the crises that are upending our world, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. Sandel shows the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgment it imposes on those left behind, and traces the dire consequences across a wide swath of American life.

Equality of conditions
Revisado: 11-21-24
Excellent insight into our current and worsening political situation. Professor Sandel clearly articulates the moral history of meritocracy and carefully dissects its positives and (under recongnized) negative implications. Makes me want to support Pete Buttigiege’s proposal for a mandatory year of public service for all 18 year olds. We need to all think more carefully about our current system.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

Expected more from Sagan

I made it through chapter ten, but I thought this would be about the long history of conflict between science and religious institutions.
I got bored of the author’s obsession with UFO’s and aliens. Would not recommend.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Excellent presentation of our current state of affairs regarding political disunity in the west. It’s always a good exercise to reevaluate your political opinions in light of better evidence.

Historia
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Much needed perspective in this pessimistic era
Revisado: 03-26-18
What made the experience of listening to Enlightenment Now the most enjoyable?
The broad historical perspective provides data as a basis for planning for a brighter, more prosperous, more just, more verdant future. As opposed to the sensationalism found in the headlines and cultural squabbles, we find here in this tour de force of past achievement, a reason for optimism based on a level headed retelling of our collective scientific progress.
Which scene was your favorite?
The candid descriptions of the "progressi-phobes" ... the political left and the right are equally susceptible to unscientific thinking that poisons our civil discourse and distracts us from finding solutions to the problems we face as individuals and collectively as a civilization.
If you could give Enlightenment Now a new subtitle, what would it be?
Enlightenment Now: or why technocrats, scientist, and enlightened humanist should be elected to govern, lead, and plan for the future.
