Fun monster story!
Revisado: 09-07-24
This is a cool tale about a monster hunter investigating a mysterious death. No spoilers, but I enjoyed the mystery, characters, and world. The audiobook narration was great. I’ll definitely check out the next book in the series.

Historia
This book maybe answers the question of whether we can become a monster, or the monster already lies deep within us, waiting for the opportunity to come to the surface. The action of this novel takes place in the region of ex-Yugoslavia as well as in prison and the court of The Hague Tribunal for war crimes. The main character is Gvozden Mishic. He is courageous, honest, hard-working, and above all, a highly honorable man. What happens when such a man of incredible persistence and will power has his heartbroken and filled with hatred? Genocide.

Brutal
Revisado: 09-20-20
This is vaguely reminiscent of Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds in terms of the general plot, but wrapped in a tale of revenge with some not-so-subtle messaging about war. Every aspect of this story is brutal and tragic. I looked more into the Bosnian War after I finished reading, just to see how accurate the story is in terms of corruption and crimes against humanity. Turns out the looting, profiteering, rape, and torture were all common and systemized. While most characters are a little one-note and some of the writing is clearly lost in the English translation, this story does capture the horrors of the war through a protagonist losing his humanity and becoming the embodiment of the fallen country around him. It's shocking, visceral, and frank in its honesty.

With Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami gives us a novel every bit as ambitious and expansive as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which has been acclaimed both here and around the world for its uncommon ambition and achievement, and whose still-growing popularity suggests that it will be read and admired for decades to come.

I’m not entirely sure what just happened there but a few people got laid and it had some talking cats so... five stars.

Great, but the audiobook isn’t ideal.
Revisado: 11-25-19
As much as I love Felicia Day’s frenetic narration and enthusiasm, this is a workbook and the pdf is necessary if you don’t have the paperback. It’s not the sort of book you listen to while driving or at the gym, so it really makes more sense to read a hard copy.

Historia
Esmy is singularly frustrated by the lack of pockets in women's clothing. Living in a small Indiana college town with her librarian brother, Jake, Esmy is stuck in a rut with fixing the same crappy WiFi issues day in and day out. But meeting Loki, the mischievous trickster god of Norse legend, ignites her life like a powder-keg. This simple, seemingly innocuous encounter leads her and Jake to discover the college campus's mysterious depths, involving voodoo priestesses, Sasquatches, vampires, a Canadian with a vendetta against the girl scouts, and much more.

Crass, light comedy
Revisado: 08-24-19
The low brow humor is the star of the show here, which is generally amusing. Tidbits of lore and a few fun character moments round out the entertainment value. I really wish the climatic battle and Loki’s scheming had been stretched out and more complicated. As is, this is a fun, juvenilely humorous romp, well delivered by its narrator.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Perfectly Gaiman
Revisado: 04-22-18
Highly recommended. This is a hauntingly beautiful read. Everything I've come to expect from Gaiman's writing. I've read it and listened to the audio book and can recommend either format. Neil Gaiman narrates his own audio books and has a soulful, soothing voice that adds so much to his already beautiful fiction.
