The love she craves. The confidence you need. At the heart of every man is a desire to master what matters. Getting a compliment at work or on the court is nice, but nothing beats hearing your spouse say, "You make me feel loved." If you haven't heard that in a while or feel like you’re not bringing your A-game to your relationship, this audio book is for you.

Historia
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear. It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic. When New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!"

Historia
The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

A riveting saga in the history of rock ‘n’ roll: the decades-long rivalry between the two men who innovated the electric guitar’s amplified sound - Leo Fender and Les Paul - and their intense competition to convince rock stars like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton to play the instruments they built.

History come to life
Revisado: 11-24-21
I absolutely loved this title as I live history books told from different perspectives. I have a new appreciation for classic rock and roll/jazz/country/blues (I'm inspired to watch the Blues Brothers movies again knowing now who some of the artists in the films are). While I still love the Beach Boys, I can't believe what they did to Chuck Berry! And I need to break open my Clapton collection now. There would have been only one thing that would have made this audible better (though I know it would severely expand the time and cost a fortune in getting rights), but I found myself pausing to listen to the songs Port does an amazing job describing. For example, as he described Les Paul's tracks or Hendrix's Woodstock National Anthem, it would have been awesome to hear an excerpt or in the background to get a full taste of the richness of Port's interpretations and analysis, which was only appreciated more upon pausing and going to YouTube (I highly recommend having supplemental YouTube music as you read). Overall, such an enjoyable experience, and no one else's voice but Pete Simonelli's could fully capture the narrative of this complex and necessary story. Time to find a documentary about the electronic guitar but I hope Port's publishers consider a movie, which there's about 3 in here.

Historia
Most of us take for granted the features of our modern society, from air travel and telecommunications to literacy and obesity. Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence.

Historia
In 1982, Sister Helen Prejean became the spiritual advisor to Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers who was sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana’s Angola State Prison. In the months before Sonnier’s death, the Roman Catholic nun came to know a man who was as terrified as he had once been terrifying. She also came to know the families of the victims and the men whose job it was to execute - men who often harbored doubts about the rightness of what they were doing.

A must read, haunting tale
Revisado: 10-16-21
I saw the movie years ago in the early 2000s when I was in college. I read the book now to revisit the film 20yrs later. Sr. Helen lays out a convincing case of understanding the evil that people do in this world while living up to the maximum of hating sin but loving the sinner. Paul reminds us in Romans 3:23 that we are all sinners; Jesus calls us to forgive one another, "seventy times seven times" (Matt 18:22), and even forgave his executioners while upon the cross (Luke 23:34). Sr. Helen captures our fallen nature, shines a light in the darkness, holds up a mirror, and challenges us to walk down the dark road together. It's a frightfully haunting tale that challenges even our deepest, closely held beliefs about love, hate, justice, forgiveness, and revenge, and holds our feet to the fire on an issue that affects anyone who believes in a democratic, free society. As Dostoyevsky said, “A society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens but by how it treats its criminals.”

Historia
T.S. Eliot was a towering figure in 20th-century literature, a renowned poet, playwright, and critic whose work - including "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1915), The Waste Land (1922), Four Quartets (1943), and Murder in the Cathedral (1935) - continues to be among the most-read and influential in the canon of American literature. The Essential T.S. Eliot collects Eliot’s most lasting and important poetry in one career-spanning audiobook, with an introduction from Vijay Seshadri, one of our foremost poets.

As an English major, I thought Eliot's poetry would be so much greater. The Waste Land was good but not exactly what I hoped it would be. He is a great poet but his work was underwhelming.

Celebrated author and newspaper columnist Rick Bragg brings us an ode to the stories and history of the Deep South, filled with “eclectic nuggets about places and people he knows well” (USA Today) and written with honesty, wit, and deep affection. A collection of wide-ranging and endearingly personal columns — from Bragg’s love of Tupperware (his mother preferred margarine tubs and thought Tupperware was “just showing off”) to the decline of country music, from the legacy of Harper Lee to the metamorphosis of the pickup truck.

A visit into the Deep South. As someone who has researched and have been writing a novel set in Mobile, AL, it was great validation knowing Bragg's essays and vignettes aligned with my research. I listened on audio (a recommended experience) laughing out loud to Bragg's nuanced humor, honesty, and nostalgia. You don't need to be from the Deep South to appreciate this collection (I grew up in New York).
