Historia
"If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the prime minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a prime minister would want an airport named after him - why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen..." So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the 10-by-12-mile island in the British West Indies.

One extremely long, repetitive rant. Getting a refund.
Revisado: 07-03-23
I agree with Kincaid’s criticism of colonialism and racism that is woven into Antigua’s history. But this book was one long rant that lacked any nuance. One will not want to visit Antigua after reading this as Kincaid decries tourism as evil and degrading for natives to even participate in the tourism industry never mind that it has made the island more prosperous. I was hoping for a book more lyrical, more insightful and complex. But this book provided about as much depth as a lengthy Facebook rant. I am thankful for Audible’s return policy.

As they recount the events surrounding the disappearance of their toddler—one with a tendency to bite—two parents cope with grief in vastly different ways. While the father wrestles with feelings of guilt, the mother is convinced she’s spotted the boy in frightening TV news reports...though let’s just say he looks nothing like the precocious little boy they remember from a decade ago.

Strong Emotional Start but then nosedives into nonsense
Revisado: 01-01-23
What a strong emotionally resonating story at the beginning! Unfortunately it veers off into bad science fiction where reality and any emotional connection to the characters or their predicament is abandoned for fantastical silliness.

Historia
In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

Fell Into Deep Hole and Loved Every Salty Second
Revisado: 08-05-22
Listened to this little gem this summer night and immediately found myself sunk into “Deep Hole”—a short story about a slacker Rhode Island surfer who finds himself over his head when a mob boss demands payment for a gambling loss. Winslow has captured off-season Northeast beach life and crafted a plot that gains momentum like a huge wave.

BRILLIANT! Feels like Burton resurrected from the dead
Revisado: 04-13-22
Why hasn’t this gem received more attention? This performance is like being visited by Burton’s ghost. The actor, Mark Rhys, captures Burton perfectly and I discovered so much about Burton’s life from Burton’s own perspective which is suffused with dark sarcasm as if he born Richard Jenkins can’t believe that this 12th born son of a Welsh miner is living the life of a Hollywood star.

Great acting, convoluted premise
Revisado: 04-08-22
If the characters have to practically exhaust themselves explaining and re-explaining the play’s bizarre magical phenomenon, it is not a good thing. Way way too much exposition. Tate Donovan and Charles Durning are fabulous however.

The third “battle” of Ayckbourn’s celebrated trilogy The Norman Conquests, returns us to the same weekend in the country, but this time to the setting of Mother’s overgrown English country garden. Something more troublesome than brambles is lurking among the roses. Havoc ensues among the flora and fauna, as this cynical masterpiece makes its way to a hilarious conclusion.

Ayckbourn is one of the UK's most produced playwrights and practically an institution, but I did not find this play the least bit amusing. Maybe it helps to be British to find it humorous.
