A Different Hiaasen but Brilliant
Revisado: 12-03-18
Brilliantly read, charming, engrossing. Not the typical Hiaasen whacko Floridians but great characters and riveting story.

Historia
Surprised, if not dismayed, to discover from his superior, Vice-Questore Patta, that leaks are emanating from the Questura, Commissario Guido Brunetti is surprised more consequentially by the appearance of a friend of his wife's, fearful that her son is using drugs and hopeful Brunetti can somehow intervene. When Tullio Gasparini, the woman's husband, is found unconscious and with a serious brain injury at the foot of a Venice bridge at midnight, Brunetti is drawn to pursue a possible connection to the boy's behavior. But the truth, as Brunetti has experienced so often, is rarely straightforward.

Maybe not suitable for audio
Revisado: 10-18-18
Well normally I am a great fan of Donna Leon’s books I found temptation of forgiveness to wander all over the place. I also found the use of accented Italian to be distracting, although the narrator an impressive job switching from one Italian character to another. Perhaps I would’ve enjoyed it more in print.

When Lane Coolman's car is bashed from behind on the road to the Florida Keys, what appears to be an ordinary accident is anything but (this is Hiaasen!). Behind the wheel of the other car is Merry Mansfield - the eponymous Razor Girl - and the crash scam is only the beginning of events that spiral crazily out of control while unleashing some of the wildest characters Hiaasen has ever set loose.

The same outrageous characters but eminently likeable. Brilliant reading performance. Some outright laughs and a constant smile on my face. I miss the main characters moments after finishing the book. Wish I could actually know them. I certainly wish them well.

Title Totally Misrepresents Content
Revisado: 11-17-15
So many reviews have been written of this book, all with the same conclusion. 1944 has little to do with the pivotal war year of 1944. It is largely the story of the holocaust and an arguement that the western powers should have done more to save the jews of Europe from the savagery of the Nazis. It is highly repetitive and goes into enormous detail, in an attempt to indict FDR.

West with the Night is the story of a remarkable woman molded and shaped by many things: the African jungle, a certain dog, horses, airplanes, friendships with white men and black. There is no life, no story quite like it.

Brilliant Woman, Brilliant Writing
Revisado: 10-28-15
A thoroughly entertaining view into a time and place - Africa, 1930s. But more than that an interior view of an extraordinary woman. I dont understand how a woman who had a sense of and respect for elephants could have scouted for hunting parties. Still, this is one of my favorite books and Julie Harris's narration does it justice.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

An Extraordinary and Inspiring Book
Revisado: 08-14-15
I almost cheered during moments of this book as the valiant Washington crew fought from adversity to triumph. Having rowed six in a Choate shell I had great empathy for the effort required to participate in this elegant, precise and demanding sport. I cannot remember a book I've enjoyed more.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Enthralling and Emotional Account
Revisado: 03-19-15
A pivotal event in world history told in relevant detail. Maybe a bit too much on the disposition of individual bodies. Narrator....hmmm. My attention kept being draw to the narration which is not a good thing. Well worth the read/listen.

Instantly recognizable, Auguste Renoir's masterpiece depicts a gathering of his real friends enjoying a summer Sunday on a café terrace along the Seine near Paris. A wealthy painter, an art collector, an Italian journalist, a war hero, a celebrated actress, and Renoir's future wife, among others, share this moment of la vie moderne, a time when social constraints were loosening and Paris was healing after the Franco-Prussian War.

Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Heavy on Detail
Revisado: 01-12-15
An exceptional book that gave me a good feel for what this extraordinary man was about. Very heavy on detail about the battles he waged - what regiment did what - slowed the narrative. The info on his romantic life was written in a romantic fashion and was highly interesting.

Historia
It is the 20th century's unrivaled epic: At a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his best-selling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted the history of how the American-led coalition fought its way from North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all - the titanic battle in Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the war's final campaign, and Atkinson's astonishingly fresh account of that enormous gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows.

A Staggeringly Brilliant Book
Revisado: 06-23-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely
What did you like best about this story?
The comprehensive and detailed accounts of the human beings involved from privates to C in C.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, impossible, even from an emotional standpoint, not to mention the length.
Any additional comments?
This book made a profound impression on me. I have studied WWII since I was 8 years old and read all the Ambrose, Churchill, German Generals, Keegan etc. This book is as good as it gets. I thought the narrator did an excellent job but pushed too hard to pronounce German and French words - even Dutch - with the foreign accent. It was distracting. When finished with the book I took a walk by myself and then went surfing to get back to today's reality.
