Historia
For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently - and far less seriously - than its male counterpart. That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them.

Feminist Slogans not Science
Revisado: 01-21-25
I bought this hoping to get insight into my wife. I was hoping for a book about the science of sex but instead soon realized that this book isn't that. I listened for about an hour and after hearing "Every woman is different and beautiful" for the 40th time I decided I had heard all there was to hear. If all you are looking for is feminist positivity then this is your book. If you want to really understand sex and the female body - look elsewhere.

Hungry for answers in the wake of her death, he starts asking questions better left unasked.

Ambrose Ibsen at his best
Revisado: 09-23-24
Great story and as always great narration by Joe Hempel - a bit of mystery that takes the story in unexpected directions.

Terrible Narration
Revisado: 09-23-24
I'm a big fan of Ambrose Ibsen and have bought a lot of his audiobooks - this one I could not get through because of the terrible narration. Every single bit of narration besides the dialogue was delivered in exactly the same way, same intonation, same pitch, same everything. It got real tedious after a while and I just couldn't go on.

Terrible Ending!!!
Revisado: 05-14-24
I won't give it away but I can't remember the last time I hated an ending to a book this much. I loved the protagonist and most of the main characters for nearly all of the book but by the ending, I hated all of them. Clearly, this is not what the author intended. I loved this book until the end and I kept listening hoping the author would suprise me and pull it out at the end. Nope, it ended it just terribly as I feared.

Historia
Remy is a tour guide for Carrow House, a notoriously haunted building. When she's asked to host seven guests for a week-long stay to research Carrow's phenomena, she hopes to finally experience some of the sightings that made the house famous. At first, it's everything they hoped for. Then a storm moves in, cutting off their contact with the outside world, and things quickly become twisted. Doors open on their own. Seances go disastrously wrong. Red liquid seeps from behind the wallpaper.

Solid but not very original
Revisado: 11-12-21
Haunted house, nobody can leave or communicate with the outside world. There's nothing particularly original about it and it's a bit of a cliche plot. It's not a bad book and I'd say it's an average "enjoyable read" rather than anything particularly creepy.

Historia
The Little Stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline - its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at 20 to nine.

Not a ghost story
Revisado: 11-12-21
This book shows up on a lot of lists of ghost stories. It was 4 hours in before anything remotely unusual happened but that quickly passed until finally, 8 hours in, nothing else had really happened and I said enough and quit. This story is interesting enough but don't read it expecting a creepy ghost story because it isn't - or at least the first 8 hours aren't.

Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, Dr. Gad Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. A professor at Concordia University who has witnessed this troubling epidemic firsthand, Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of these concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society.

This book by Professor is incredibly insightful and sheds a lot of light on how ideas spread - including ideas that aren't particularly good. The author's writing style makes for an easy listen with a compelling message to share.

First Dresden Book I ever Returned
Revisado: 04-28-21
I've gotten all of the Dresden Files books and loved everyone - except perhaps the one before this Peace Talks. The old Dresden formula of mystery and cleverness and solving problems with limited resources seems to be gone. To be fair, I only got about two hours into this book before I quit on it. It not only didn't grab me, it turned me off. This feels like Indiana Jones' 4th movie.

The sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse have destroyed most of the planet…yet out of these waters, Dinétah, a former Navajo reservation, has been miraculously reborn. Listen along as Tanis Parenteau's impeccable narration, capturing the rhythms of Navajo speech, fully envelopes you into the Sixth World. Trail of Lightning follows our heroine as she walks the land alongside gods, heroes of legend, and monsters alike.

Slow and Tedious
Revisado: 02-13-19
If you are looking for a monster-hunting, "Dresden-esque" book then this is NOT for you. I got as far as 2 1/2 hours into the book before I just couldn't stand the angst and introspection anymore. This book is short on the supernatural or combat and big on self-loathing and personal doubt. The author teases the idea of a post-apocalyptic world but then refuses to engage with it leaving the listener disappointed. The narrator is monotonous; the pace, intonation and emphasis never vary from one sentence to the next.

From these disparate phenomena: Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who as president of a Midwestern college observed the trials of this generation up close, sees an existential threat to the American way of life. In The Vanishing American Adult, Sasse diagnoses the causes of a generation that can't grow up and offers a path for raising children to become active and engaged citizens. He identifies core formative experiences that all young people should pursue.

Bland and Saccharine
Revisado: 05-31-17
I want to begin by saying I agree with just about every point the author makes - we align pretty closely politically. My complaint therefore is not in ideology but in presentation and substance (or the lack thereof). I got about halfway through this book and had to quit. The book shies away from anything that might be the least bit provocative and engaging. Have you ever got one of those cards in the mail close to election that shows a candidate with his family and dog on the front lawn that says vote for "so and so" because he understands American families? This is the book version of this. It is mostly just a collection of stories about what a prefect dad he is. I would guess Sasse only wrote the book so he could quote it later during an election campaign.
