Historia
Kate Ardleigh is everything the Victorian English gentlewoman is not - outspoken, free-thinking, American...and a writer of the frowned upon penny dreadfuls. Soon after her arrival in Essex, England, a body is unearthed in a nearby archeological dig - and Kate has the chance to not only research her latest story but to begin her first case with amateur detective Sir Charles Sheridan.

Historia
“I’m sorry but the answer’s no.” Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he’s splitting and their deal is over. The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind. His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London’s West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night. The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing.

Brilliant
Revisado: 01-13-23
Can’t beat the combination of this writer and this narrator. The story is entertaining, the wit, dry. The characters engaging enough that you keep coming back for more!
Highly recommend the series.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Distractions.....
Revisado: 09-16-18
Brilliantly performed by all the actors - the background noises were a little distracting, but not as much as the music whenever Emma Thompson was narrating. I enjoyed it immensely, and appreciate it being free - but would be put off purchasing with the background. The delivery of the dialogue is good enough that it doesn't need anything but their voices.

When NOT to change a voice.....
Revisado: 05-19-17
What made the experience of listening to When Maidens Mourn the most enjoyable?
The fleshy story with lots of juicy subplots
What did you like best about this story?
Characters are so well developed, and the writing is intelligent and articulate - for an American, Ms. Harris only occasionally throws in an American word.
What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?
Everything, she is truly the best and could read the phone book and make it interesting..... except the one slip up in this book....
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
no-just another good story.
Any additional comments?
Yes - an earlier major character, Kat Boleyn is Irish. Ms. Porter, who is so absolutely brilliant, changed Kat's accent from Irish to English for some reason. Completely threw me off!

Watching paint dry

Underdeveloped in all ways and too wordy. Boring. Too worried about use of large words and people never seemed real.

Never disappointing
Revisado: 03-19-15
I always figure it out, but the books are well written and the narrator is outstanding. Smart to keep using the same person, makes it comfortable.
Well worth listening but start with book 1 and get to know everyone.
