Historia
Steely Dan's songs are exercises in fictional world-building. No one else in the classic-rock canon has conjured a more vivid cast of rogues and heroes, creeps and schmucks, lovers and dreamers and cold-blooded operators-or imbued their characters with so much humanity.

A few fun facts, but too much name dropping and scant musical knowledge or info. Mediocre narration wears thin. Overall, just okay.

Clever history lesson
Revisado: 01-20-25
I loved this book. The narration was humorous, upbeat and continuously clever. There’s a lot of history covered, and the irreverence at the foibles of these kings and queens was so amusing I was laughing out loud to the point of public embarrassment. Highly recommended!

Historia
Award-winning journalist and CNN correspondent Elle Reeve was not surprised by the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. With years of in-depth research and on-the-ground investigative reporting under her belt, Reeve was aware of the preoccupations of the online far right and their journey from the computer to QAnon, militias, and racist groups. At the same time, Reeve saw a parallel growth of counterforces, with citizen vigilantes using new tools and tactics to take down the far right.

Unlistenable Do-It-Yourself Narration
Revisado: 01-07-25
Incompetent vocal-fry narration. Voiceover acting is best left to the professionals, authors. This is why AI will soon be able to provide audiobook reading services, making all audiobooks more affordable. And, we can skip this usually bad idea of authors reading their own books.

Historia
George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is arguably the greatest piece of participatory art ever created. Adored by millions, it is performed each year by renowned choirs and orchestras, as well as by audiences singing along with the words on their cell phones. But this work of triumphant joy was born in a worried age. Britain in the early Enlightenment was a place of astonishing creativity but also the seat of an empire mired in war, enslavement, and conflicts over everything from the legitimacy of government to the meaning of truth.

This book is not about Handel
Revisado: 11-22-24
What a frustrating book! It seemed like a schoolboy’s book report, when its writer hadn’t read the book. There are thousands of sentences written about everything under the Sun EXCEPT G.F. Handel!
How did this book get published? I’m mystified! Apparently, Handel had few letters or writings that survived the centuries since his death. Nor were there any worthy accounts from people who knew him. So what do we get? Pretty much nothing about Handel himself.
What a mess. Now I go forward, looking for a book that’s actually about Handel. Sigh.

They often talk more about religion than music. This is really a dumb podcast masquerading as an audiobook. Skip it. There are better books about Stevie Wonder.

Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

Hey Malcom: This is an audiobook, not a podcast! Learn the difference and get a pro voice to read for your audiobooks. Drop the actors, music, window dressing, and your halting delivery.
All of it is annoying and getting even more self-indulgent. Beyond that, this rehashing of "Tipping Point" -- itself rife with misinformation -- feels like a money grab.
Yuck. I feel too generous giving your personal finance enhancement book project even two stars.

Historia
Bottled & Sold shows how water went from being a free natural resource to one of the most successful commercial products of the last 100 years - and why we are poorer for it. It's a big story and water is big business. Every second of every day in the United States, a thousand people buy a plastic bottle of water, and every second of every day a thousand more throw one of those bottles away. That adds up to more than 30 billion bottles a year and tens of billions of dollars of sales. Are there legitimate reasons to buy all those bottles?

This book was profoundly interesting for me, and much of it is still current and relevant even though it’s now 14 years after it was published.
However, it was quite disconcerting to hear dozens of references to an era that would’ve been hip and trendy two decades ago. Perhaps the author would consider creating an update to this important information!

When he signed up for a psychedelic retreat run by a mysterious Argentine woman deep in Brazil’s rainforest in early 2018, Ernesto Londoño, a veteran New York Times journalist, was so depressed he had come close to jumping off his terrace weeks earlier. His nine-day visit to Spirit Vine Ayahuasca Retreat Center included four nighttime ceremonies during which participants imbibed a vomit-inducing plant-based brew that contained DMT, a powerful mind-altering compound.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.
