Historia
Bryony and her sisters have come down in the world. Their merchant father died trying to reclaim his fortune and left them to eke out a living in a village far from their home in the city. But when Bryony is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an abandoned manor, she stumbles into a house full of dark enchantments. Is the Beast that lives there her captor or a fellow prisoner? Is the house her enemy or her ally? And why are roses blooming out of season in the courtyard?

The narrator was TRASH!
Revisado: 04-24-25
This book is an excellent spin on the classic French story. I love the changes and details that Kingfisher included in the book.
The narrator is horrible. She has the worst fake British accent I have EVER HEARD!!! I’m not kidding. Some words she said okay, but like 90% of it was this horrible nasally mess, like a bad impression of a very posh Kent accent. I almost returned the book, that’s how bad her speaking voice was. And her voice acting was also bad. There are moments where the beast is supposedly yelling/upset, and in the narrator says them in a slow nasally calm voice. At first, I thought the girl was supposed to be annoying and terrible, but then I realized it was just how the narrator was talking, and the girl is actually very likable. The narrator just kept making every thought and word sound whiney (and I don’t think it was an intentional choice). I think that the accent was (obviously) way beyond her abilities, and so she was so focused on the accent she forgot to do any voice acting.

I highly recommend this reading of the book. The woman reading it puts all the right emphasis on the best lines, and really makes you appreciate the intelligence and whit of Jane Austen. I love how much effort is put into the wrapping up of this book, the author left no question unanswered. This is a must read book, and this narrator did a very good job.

Terrible pacing.
Revisado: 06-02-24
This could have been a good book, but it wasn’t. Here we are in beautiful Egypt, and the majority of the book is spent in a French themed hotel. The chapters were choppy and it often felt jarring to move from one chapter to the next. NOTHING HAPPENED for almost the entire book. Also, if the main character just stayed home, everyone’s lives would have been better. She was unlikable, naive in a not fun way, and made maddening decisions while never succeeding at anything. The book ended in the most infuriatingly vague way. There is no real ending for this book, and yet they add completely new info that will start the plot for book two. Do not read! There are far better books you can choose.

Fantastic take on a classic tale.
Revisado: 01-09-23
This book was well paced and well thought out. The lore, world building and reason given for the blood drinking were creative and expertly written. I felt like there was a tiny something missing that I can’t put my finger on. Maybe it was the of questions answered at the end. To be gauge enough to not spoil the ending, I want to know, is this an isolated thing, or widespread?

The best narrator, and free.
Revisado: 06-15-22
If you have an audible subscription, this is the one to choose. Not only is it free, but the woman who reads it is far superior than the other versions made of this book.
Obviously the book is an extremely famous classic for a reason. It is amazing. A brief and vague description: This is a coming of age story about a girl named Lucy. It takes place first in Italy, then in the English country side. You should read it.

If you don’t cry reading this, you’re dead inside.
Revisado: 05-11-22
This book is well written with a compelling main character and plot. I find stories about grifters so fascinating. I would have loved to read about more cons and what they involved, but a book can only be so long.
I really loved this book despite the disturbing content. Although there is CSA, it isn’t gratuitous, it was important to the story, and it was treated very delicately. I appreciate that the author included every single help line number anyone could possibly need at the end of the book.
This book needs trigger warnings for the following: Sexual assault of a minor, extreme violence, domestic abuse, child abuse, swearing.

I absolutely loved this story. It hooked me right away, wasn’t predictable, and I laughed all the way through the book.
I am a nanny, and I found her struggles and experiences extremely relatable. The book was thoughtful, and took a peak into the perspective of a 1/4 life crisis.

At best the book was boring, at its worst, the book was offensive to Natives, all women, and people with mental disabilities.
Revisado: 10-27-21
If I had to guess what year this was published I would have said in the 1960’s-1970’s. In reality it was 2005.
The authors portrayal of women felt outdated and sexist. Characters male and female frequently passed out or lost consciousness. It is what less skilled authors use to transition from one scene to another, and this author used it frequently.
Why did that war scene drag on for SO LONG!!!!!! I typically enjoy battle scenes in books, but this one just took FOREVER! And got us nowhere at all!
In general, this book was written by a man for men. The male gaze is the only thing that schists in this book. The characters are caricatures of stereotypes. So unrealistic, not a single believable person in the lot.
Next, there was way too big an age gap between the two main love interests. 20+ year age gap with the girl being early 20’s… ewww. Also, what was with the intense slave rape. What the heck?! How did that story line add to the book? Also, what was with an entire character pretending to be mentally handicap? That is so offensive.
I also had an issue with the authors depiction of the Natives. It is very clearly a parallel to natives in the real world. Some of the native tribes wore feathers braided into their hair, their women walked around topless, there was a tribe that rode horses and many other examples that lets the reader know these are a stand in for Native people in the America’s. But… It left a bad taste in my mouth. The Marat (aka the natives) were consistently called savages, they were the enemy and driven off the land by the magic world era. The Marat themselves were magicless and were seen as barbaric. The author made the Marat cannibals and they scalped people. It just rubbed me the wrong way. It made it seem like the majority of the Marat (coded Native A.) were barbaric savages with no right to the land. I maybe am reading too much into it, idk.

A true epic with unexpected depth.
Revisado: 06-29-21
This book was so long, I feel like I have lived a full life time as it’s main character in the best way possible. This book is very well written, and for those listening to the audio book, the narrator is one of my favorites. The only tricky part of the story was how many named characters are introduced, often with similar sounding names. However, the author did an excellent job of contextualizing it so you know who was who. It was dense as far as political intrigue goes, and to be honest there was not enough combat in the book. I recommend this book for anyone who likes strong, complex, feminist woman.
