Excellent

High quality historical fiction at its finest. This is no mere adventure novel set in the age of sail. the author shows superb command of the subject especially the key differences between the navy when his story is set and the more famous Napoleonic Navy. The characters are complex, their mission is difficult and true to history. I've been trying to find a new series in this vane for a while and will happily continue reading this author.

I can't recommend this book enough. I am an attorney and an amateur historian and The author knows his stuff. The author makes his critically important case with passion, skill, and knowledge. He put many of my frustrations into words far better than I have ever heard anyone else manage. Read this book and reflect hard on its message.

Comprehensive and compelling

For a book that is filled with horror I had a hard time setting it aside. I learned many things in this book you don't get from studying individual camps or periods of time. The contradictions of policy, changes over time, disobediance to orders, and so many more things make the camps a strange and fascinating story. Most importantly telling the camp systems story in total from beginning to end helps understand what was happening in context like no other book i have read on the subject.

History brought alive

I found this one of her better efforts. she does justice to many complicated and imperfect characters during a time of great upheaval. well worth the credit.

Not a history book. Cherry picking examples to mal

I can't believe this is rated so highly. Author makes bold conclusions supported by little evidence and doesnt explore alternatives. Very guilty of cherry picking examples at best and not having a broad understanding of history in general at worst.

Worth reading for the info it contained. Could have been so much better if it was clearly written and better edited. Book was both repetitive at points and some how didnt have enough detail in crucial parts. Author has a habit of making conclusory statements that might have been interesting if explored but lacked support.

Thought provoking and compelling!

Powerfully told story of some obvious and some surprising examples of harm caused by science. Treats with both the science and the history well and the performance is excellent. Definitely insipred me to read more about some of these topics.
