This memoir is absolutely fantastic. Too many times daughters of abusive moms are either swept into the corner or branded as black sheep for being “difficult” or “ungrateful” Because abusive behavior is something one should be grateful for, que eye roll.
Jennette did a phenomenal job writing and narrating her story, and at the exact same time she was telling that story she gave a voice to those of us who had similar upbringings who were labeled ungrateful and terrible daughters. Thanks for the voice, we really owe you Jennette.

and to think I nearly didn't get it

Wonderful, don't listen to those being negative about the accents, she grew up so very sheltered of course they sounded that way to her! We all know there are accents, mine included, that sound like a pot of beans being cooked on a wood stove and she never heard anyone talk with so much drawl. Can we really fault her for that? Her experience? Couldn't be me honestly. Get the book, you'll not regret it, just listen from the perspective of Rebecca and not yourself.
