Great story, would have been better without the virtue signaling and Trump derangement syndrome
Revisado: 03-10-23
Title says it all. The background music was distracting. I don’t understand the need to bring in politics that add nothing to the story other than virtue signaling.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Good story, gratuitous profanity
Revisado: 03-03-23
The profanity did nothing to enhance the story and felt unnecessary. Otherwise a good story.

Good story, could do without the virtue signaling
Revisado: 12-11-20
I don’t understand why an author would choose to denigrate at least half of their readers by making negative comments about people who support President Trump. The comments were gratuitous and added nothing to the story. Keep it up if you only want leftists to buy your books; you may be surprised how many people don’t share your political viewpoint.

Historia
Once a luxurious Southern getaway on a rustic lake, then reduced to a dilapidated crash pad, the Summer House is now the grisly scene of a nighttime mass murder. Eyewitnesses point to four Army Rangers - known as the Night Ninjas - recently returned from Afghanistan. To ensure that justice is done, the Army sends Major Jeremiah Cook, a veteran and former NYPD cop, to investigate. But the major and his elite team arrive in sweltering Georgia with no idea their grim jobs will be made exponentially more challenging by local law enforcement....

Good book, could use less value signaling
Revisado: 08-14-20
The story would have been better without the stereotyping of southern people as racist that really added no value to the story.

Constant Childish Banter Between Characters
Revisado: 03-29-18
Story was good but childish banter between characters got old very quickly. Real people don’t interact that way 24/7 like the characters in this book. The banter is a distraction.

Historia
In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death - in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence....

Historia
The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer's career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track - until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the "lucky" associates. She's offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she'd get her old job back. In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about.

Don't Drink The Environmentalists Leftist Cool Aid
Revisado: 03-09-15
Would you try another book from John Grisham and/or Catherine Taber?
Yes, because I heave enjoyed previous books by him. However, I will write him off if he tries to promote a liberal environmentalist agenda again.
Has Gray Mountain turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not yet but close.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Catherine Taber?
Yes
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gray Mountain?
I would try to be more balanced and not attempt to stereotype Republicans or Corporations. There are many good Coal Companies, and most people from the coal producing regions are grateful for the jobs they create in the mines and supporting businesses.
Any additional comments?
I grew up in the region discussed in this book and found the author's portrayal of it very unrealistic.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Anti-Christian, Anti-Conservative Liberal Bias
Revisado: 06-18-14
Would you try another book from Colin Woodard and/or Walter Dixon?
No, the author's disdain for conservatives, Christians, and southerners was clearly on display.
What could Colin Woodard have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Stuck with the facts and provide a balanced view.
Any additional comments?
It appears the author cherry picked quotes to make conservatives, Christians, southerners, and republicans appear racist and stupid while trying to make environmentalist, liberals, and democrats out to be geniuses out to save America from the idiots in the first group. The fact that most of the racist leaders in the South were democrats was never mentioned, he even referenced KKK Wizard Senator Byrd but failed to identify him as a democrat while referencing the party of every wacko on the other side.
Don't waste your time on this propaganda.
