Historia
Whether Samantha Irby is talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets; explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette; detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father’s ashes; sharing awkward sexual encounters; or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms (hang in there for the Costco loot!); she’s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.

um, what was that?
Revisado: 08-09-18
I have no idea what I just listened to. It jumped from one place to another in so many random ways. I didn't really relate to a lot of what she talked about. Easily listened at 1.25x speed and it sounded normal after I felt it was too slow when I started listening.

Decades later, no one has been charged with the murder, but the aggrieved inhabitants of West Cork are convinced they know who did it - and he still lives among them.

I wasn't sure what to expect here, I thought it was going to be like a book, but it's not at all. it's is 100% like a true crime Podcast. interesting though, I enjoyed it.

basically the same but still good
Revisado: 01-19-18
Enjoyed it as much as the original, despite that it wasn't that different because they are together almost the entire book. The narrator is excellent, but I was about to vomit if I heard him say "my sweet, sweet girl" one more time.

sweet, easy read
Revisado: 12-07-17
I enjoyed this book. It was a sweet, young love, easy to listen to. It is quite predictable, but the story still kept my attention the whole time. Definitely far from complex, but sometimes it's welcomed to listen to something that doesn't require much thought or undivided attention. Audible labeled it about 3/4 the way up the "steamy" scale, but on a scale of zero to 50 Shades of Grey, this is maybe halfway at most.

Historia
Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister.

just alright
Revisado: 11-16-17
I don't want to discount any person's struggle to escape that horrible place, but this story was somewhat short and therefore lacked details. I would have liked a more in depth story. I'm a bit fascinated by stories of escape like this and have listened to a few from other former North Koreans. Some were better than this, some far worse.

Ending felt very rushed
Revisado: 11-15-17
I enjoyed this book and definitely did not expect that ending! But the last 10 chapters felt very rushed to me. I actually went back and listened to the last 10 chapters a second time because I felt like I missed something with how fast it was. Those last chapters seemed to lack detail like earlier in the book and just glossed over the story to get it done. In other words, I wanted more story!

Good enough to finish

This kept my attention throughout and enjoyed it. Not the best ever, but not a bad read either. the voice of Lindsey was fine, but I found the voice of Sophie to be very robotic sounding which bothered me.

In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Interesting enough to finish the whole book
Revisado: 06-26-17
Interesting enough to finish the whole book, but no gripping suspense for the most part like another escape from North Korea book I listened to. The narrator speaks painfully slow and lacked emotion which is probably why I felt the lacking suspense. I listened at 1.35x speed to make it sound normal. She is Korean and lives or has lived in England, so you get Korean-accented British English. Sounded strange at first, but I got used to it.

Historia
In Cruise Confidential, Brian David Bruns spills the dirt - or, in this case, the dirty water - on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the year he spent working for Carnival Cruise Lines takes listeners down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving listeners gasping with laughter as they're assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre. Stewards fighting over food. Cutlery allowances and other nonsensical rules.

great narrator and storytelling
Revisado: 06-12-17
Very entertaining. The narrator is great with all the accents, the audio book is great for that over reading the paper version. The author is a great storyteller. I found out there are 3 more books from the series and can't wait to listen to them also.

Historia
North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

just alright
Revisado: 06-10-16
The narrator ruined this book for me. He doesn't do any voices for the characters at all. Just reads it though like a book report or something. The sound editing is horrible. Many parts actually sound like a different man pops in to read 1 or 2 sentences where they have gone back to do some editing.
The story is written in the third person like a documentary. I finished Dear Leader: My Escape from North Korea before this one and enjoyed it much more. I probably would have enjoyed this one more with a better narrator.
