Historia
When the crows gather over a remote Navajo Reservation in the deep Southwest, it is a sign that the thin veil that separates our world from the one beyond is about to open. Without a barrier between life and death, things pass between both worlds. Some of them are good. Most of them are not.

Not like Tony Hillerman!
Revisado: 12-13-23
I picked this up bc several reviews compared the books to Tony Hillerman. It was not even close. The story line was interesting and elements of Navajo culture were picked up, but they were thin and stretched. There were inconsistencies within each book, which I found distracting. Overall, it read like a set of mediocre teen novels rather than the well developed mystery/fantasy it could have been.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Engaging
Revisado: 08-21-21
Miller writes a smooth, engaging, and beautiful tale of Achilles from the perspective of his companion Patroclus. Her story meshes well with the Iliad and Mythology. Frazer Douglas is a wonderful narrator whose voice wonderfully compliments this story. I was engaged right to the end and was pleasantly surprised that the final minute brought tears of joy to my eyes.

Reads like a report
Revisado: 12-23-19
This read like a college report on Roman life. It did a poor job of addressing the everyday life. It was stiff , limited in scope and a little repetitive. The reader struggled with a lot of words, although I’d struggle with Latin names as well.

Historia
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.”

A good horror story
Revisado: 11-17-19
This is a well told and disturbing novel. Although the delivery sometimes made it difficult to tell whose voice you are listening to, the narration is smooth and clear. From the story perspective, I found myself alternating between wanting to stop listening and wanting to know what would happen.

Historia
Zadie Smith has established herself as one of the most iconic, critically respected, and popular writers of her generation. In her first short story collection, she combines her power of observation and her inimitable voice to mine the fraught and complex experience of life in the modern world. Interleaving 11 completely new and unpublished stories with some of her best-loved pieces from The New Yorker and elsewhere, Smith presents a dizzyingly rich and varied collection of fiction.

Not for me
Revisado: 10-14-19
Heard good things on NPR, but the audio book just didn’t hold my attention. I struggled to follow the story and the jumps between characters. Doc Brown’s performance was good and there were times I was pulled in to the story. I may enjoy this more if I read it with my eyes instead of my ears.
