Historia
Dr. Laura Anderson takes an honest look at a side of religion that few like to talk about. Drawing from her own life and therapy practice, she helps listeners understand what religious trauma is and isn't, and how high-control churches can be harmful and abusive, often resulting in trauma. She shows how elements of fundamentalist church life—such as fear of hell, purity culture, corporal punishment, and authoritarian leaders—can cause psychological, relational, physical, and spiritual damage.

A must read if this is your jam…
Revisado: 10-20-23
I’m grateful to have this book for my own healing journey and to recommend to anyone dealing with religious trauma. I’ve done a lot of reading in this area and this is perhaps the most thorough yet accessible treatment I’ve come across yet - certainly one of the first books I’ll think of when asked for a recommendation. Excellent performance by the author - if you like Dr Laura Anderson’s content on social media, you’ll love this book!

Historia
Che Guevara was a dashing rebel whose epic dream was to end poverty and injustice in Latin America and the developing world through armed revolution. Jon Lee Anderson traces Che's extraordinary life from his comfortable Argentine upbringing to the battlefields of the Cuban revolution, from the halls of power in Castro's government to his failed campaign in the Congo and his assassination in the Bolivian jungle.

It’s been 20 years since I read a friend’s copy of this incredible book and recently found myself wanting to revisit it after recommending it to a friend. I got the audiobook and a new physical copy because I’m a nerd.
The performance is excellent. The book has been revised since the audiobook was recorded so following along can be tricky. I would have given 5 stars across the board if the chapters on the audiobook were better formatted. A book of this caliber really deserves it.
Highly recommend for anyone wanting a more nuanced, intimate understanding of this polarizing and iconic figure.

Historia
In this brilliant biography T. J. Stiles offers a new understanding of the legendary outlaw Jesse James. Although he has often been portrayed as a Robin Hood of the old west, in this ground-breaking work Stiles places James within the context of the bloody conflicts of the Civil War to reveal a much more complicated and significant figure.

Excellent book & performance
Revisado: 05-25-23
Stiles presents a vivid, thoroughly researched portrait of Jesse James in the context of his times. Well performed and produced, I’d recommend it to any history buff.
The narrator does mispronounce a few names/locations, but the rest of his performance more than makes up for it.

Historia
In a bold and moving book that is sure to spark heated debate, the novelist and cultural critic James Carroll maps the profoundly troubling 2,000-year course of the Church’s battle against Judaism and faces the crisis of faith it has provoked in his own life as a Catholic. More than a chronicle of religion, this dark history is the central tragedy of Western civilization, its fault lines reaching deep into our culture.

Great book, poor performance
Revisado: 11-30-22
Should be required reading for anyone who calls themselves a Christian. Unfortunately, the performance sounds like a cross between Siri and William Shatner.

Written by a cult survivor and renowned expert on cults and totalitarianism, Terror, Love and Brainwashing draws on the author's 25 years of study and research to explain how almost anyone, given the right set of circumstances, can be radically manipulated to engage in otherwise incomprehensible and often dangerous acts.

Excellent book, distracting performance
Revisado: 08-01-22
Thoroughly researched, well written, and profoundly insightful… but the narrator sounds like a character in a crime noir film. It’s not as bad once you get a third of the way through, but it struck me as a pretty odd match for a book of this caliber. Don’t let that stop you from spending a credit on this though - it’s an important read. Highly recommend
